Meet Madison Patrylick of Mad Jewels in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Patrylick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I inherited my obsession with jewelry & accessories as far as my memory serves me, thanks to my mom. When I was about eight, we got a Unesco gift catalog in the mail & I was obsessed with a bracelet made of safety pins. Of course, my mom wasn’t going to spend a Benji on a bracelet for an 8-year-old, so I got my little bead box out & started assembling my own version solely based on looking at the picture. This self-taught effort began a life long passion of jewelry design over the years, little of which I ever knew would launch me into creating my own brand.

Mad Jewels was founded in 2011 as a side hustle while I was working in the Oil & Gas field. I left that job to pursue medical sales & continue Mad Jewels. It was shortly after starting in that field that I realized my passion was designing jewelry and that it was definitely what I was called to be doing full time. I went all in 2012 and have not looked back since (although I think about throwing the towel in at least once a month, doesn’t every entrepreneur?).

Giving back to the community is something that is very important to me. We are constantly working with various charities on a revolving basis. You can click our “Shop For A Cause” tab to see how you can help & make sure you sign up for our emails to know when we’re partnering with a new charity. My parents instilled in me early on, it is more blessed to give than it is to receive & we want to pass that along to all of our customers!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say it has not been smooth at all! However, it has been a fantastic learning experience over the last several years since starting Mad Jewels. I am self-taught, I didn’t have any ‘training’ or classes or experience in making jewelry–just a God-given talent that I’m able to look at something & figure out how to assemble it. Aside from the physical aspect of actually putting the jewelry together, I’ve learned a lot about business. I would say that almost has come easier coming from a family of entrepreneurs and having a business mindset. I view all of the past struggles though with confidence now, because it has allowed me to learn a great deal that I may not have otherwise.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mad Jewels is sold in hundreds of boutiques throughout the country & internationally. We also sell to Nordstrom; they carry select styles online and in stores. We specialize in affordable, on-trend jewelry. Our slogan is “jewelry to suit your every mood”, so I strive to create affordable pieces seeing as one day you may feel preppy, and the next you might feel Boho–our customer should be able to snag both styles in one transaction without feeling any guilt. I am most proud I would say that I have truly built this from the ground up. I’ve had emotional support from family & friends, but it has taken true grit for me to get Mad Jewels to where it is today. I don’t feel like I give myself enough credit–I never want anything to go to my head– but I am very proud of all my hard work and looking forward to seeing this baby continue to grow. I think what sets us apart is the ability for me to translate into design that all women should be unapologetically themselves. I’ve been told over the years our collection doesn’t all match, and it’s missing this or missing that–but to me, it all flows. No one fits into this box personality or style and only wears that. I know so many women who can be in pearls & an LBD one day and then be in a beach dress with flip flops and no makeup on the next. I strive to give that vibe to our customers, that you can come as you are, how you are right at this moment.

What were you like growing up?
I was super girly but super adventurous. A girly tomboy? I’m not sports-obsessed, never have been, but really enjoy being outdoors & hiking, exploring, etc. None of that has changed. I was very stubborn and hard-headed (still am) and once I set my sights on a goal, I never quit. I would not let anything get in my way. I am still that way for the most part to this day–sometimes, I have to remind myself of how I was when I was a kid to not get in my own way of success now. Traveling is also a big favorite pastime of mine. I have two young daughters and hoping to be able to take them all across the world. It did wonders for my education & opening my eyes to how blessed & fortunate we all are.
