Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Zuckerman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Madison. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started with a lot of family members! My grandfather owned a salon before my parents met. My mom and her good friend worked for my grandfather and later on got their cosmetology license. My mom’s friend branched off and opened his own salon, which then my mom followed! My aunt also got her cosmetology license and worked at the salon with my mom. Eventually, I went Through a cosmetology school in high school.
As soon as I graduated/received my license I started my career right away! After three years, I finally decided to further my career and to venture out. I then moved to a new salon in Plano called LeeGraves salon. The owner of this salon is Karri! I grew up knowing her from doing competitive cheer with her daughters, which she is also best friends with my mom. She offered me this great opportunity to come and work with her at her brand new salon! Not only has it taught me so many amazing life lessons, but to help grow my business!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Anyone who has their own business knows it’s never a smooth road. There are so many factors that goes in to growing a business and being successful. One of my biggest struggles was initially getting clientele. As a newbie- working in a booth rental salon, I had to work hard to advertise myself and get my name out there. Meeting new faces and welcoming them into my chair without being nervous or awkward was rough at first, but once you’ve done it a few times, it gets so easy it becomes a habit. One of the biggest struggles I’ve personally dealt with my business was COVID-19. It took a huge toll on the beauty industry (and still is) I was Without work for well over a month – six weeks to be exact. Going on with life with no job/income is hard. You become so accustomed to seeing your co-workers and clients everyday to nothing it hard. I’m just blessed with amazing people in my life who support me so much!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a hairstylist! Technically I have my own business because I’ve built up my own reputation and clientele. I specialize in color! I do Loads of blondes and color corrections but seriously any type of color! I love doing vivids, as well! I’m proud of the success I’ve been able to achieve at my age. It’s not easy to grow a business from scratch, no matter the industry. Being 22 and as successful as I know there is so much room to grow and become even more successful makes me even more eager for the future. I wouldn’t necessarily say there’s a specific thing that sets me apart from others only because every hairstylist is unique. We each have our own specialties and different skills that we are good at! I’d like to think my skill set for my age/experience in the industry is what sets me apart from others. I think Highly of myself (and my clients) and wouldn’t want it any other way!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. But in my book, success means the name you make for yourself. How professional and classy people think of you. Are my clients 100% satisfied with their service? Are they so satisfied with me and my services are they going to spread the word about me? How far can I make it in this industry? Etc.
When other stylists ask me for their opinion or need help with something that makes me feel like I’ve taken another step forward in success. It gives me gratitude knowing that they think highly of me enough to want my help. I also Like to look at the differences in each year of Income and how booked up I get.
Truthfully I don’t Have criteria or any markers to help me understand my success. I know that if I keep One foot in front of the other at all times, and keep my head high through all the negative, it will help push me to success!
