Meet Maggie Povroznik of East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Povroznik.

Hi Maggie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started baking in high school after falling in love with the baking shows on Food Network. I was so inspired by the works of art that they were creating and I wanted to try it myself. I started baking everything from cakes and cookies to pies and even attempted sugar art.

I took a break from baking when I went off to college, but I found my way back to it when I started baking again as a way to relieve stress from school. That’s when I realized it was more than a hobby and that this was my passion and what I wanted to do with my life.

I officially started my home bakery, XO Sugar Home Bakery, in the fall of 2023 and I’ve been baking ever since! I love creating custom treats for special events and being part of people’s most memorable celebrations.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been easy running a home bakery on my own. I had to learn a lot about the business side of things, like how to handle finances. I was lucky to have studied some marketing and social media in school, which has helped me tremendously.

For most of 2024, I was living in College Station, TX, and it was challenging to adjust to a completely new environment and build a new client base from scratch. I experienced that same challenge again when I moved back to Dallas, TX, in May 2025. However, each move taught me how to adapt and grow my business in new ways, which I’m incredibly thankful for.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in custom cakes and decorated sugar cookies. I love bringing my customers’ visions to life and creating something that perfectly fits their event or celebration. I truly enjoy the creative process of turning an idea into something beautiful and delicious.

I take a lot of pride in making everything from scratch—all of my cakes, cookies, buttercreams, and fillings are made fresh in my kitchen. When someone compliments not just how my cakes look, but how they taste, that’s the best compliment I could ever receive. What sets me apart is my dedication to both flavor and design. I want every dessert to taste just as amazing as it looks.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Starting a business is a huge risk in itself. Without taking chances and putting myself out there, I wouldn’t be where I am today. As a home baker, I’m limited in what I can produce in my kitchen, but I’m always willing to push those boundaries.

Taking on larger or more complicated orders, like tiered cakes, can definitely feel intimidating, but I always choose to accept the challenge. Each new project helps me grow and become a better baker.
