Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Stenson.
Hi Maggie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for working with individuals struggling with eating disorders began over ten years ago while I was pursuing my Master’s in Clinical Nutrition at UT Southwestern. At the time, I wasn’t sure which area of nutrition I wanted to specialize in, nothing had truly resonated with me yet. That all changed one day when a dietitian came to speak to our class about her work with eating disorders. As she described the relational nature of the work and the focus on a non-diet, compassionate approach to food, I knew in that moment that this was exactly what I was meant to do.
After graduation, I began my career at The Renfrew Center in Dallas, an eating disorder treatment facility that provided partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient. About a year later, I joined the team at Eating Recovery Center in Plano, where I spent the next four years working across multiple levels of care including inpatient, residential, and partial hospitalization. In 2020, I transitioned into the outpatient setting, continuing my work with clients in Dallas until 2023.
In June 2023, my husband and I moved to Georgetown and opened ATX Nutritional Counseling. Since then, we’ve grown to include two office locations, in Georgetown and Austin, and offer virtual sessions across Texas. I provide nutrition counseling for eating disorders, disordered eating, and general nutrition concerns. My approach is rooted in compassion and guided by the principles of intuitive eating, Health at Every Size (HAES), and a non-diet philosophy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been ups and downs along the way! My passion for this work has been the driving force that’s kept me going throughout the past ten years of my career. One of the biggest challenges when I first entered the field of eating disorders was realizing how much of what makes a skilled clinician can’t be learned in the classroom. So much of this work involves understanding complex mental health conditions and developing therapeutic skills that come only through continuing education, curiosity, asking thoughtful questions, and seeking guidance from trusted mentors. Even now, I’m always eager to keep learning and growing, and I hope to continue developing my skills for the rest of my career.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I founded ATX Nutritional Counseling in January 2024 as an outpatient dietitian practice dedicated to providing compassionate, individualized nutrition care. Our services include individual and family counseling, group counseling in areas such as body image and intuitive eating, meal support, and professional workshops. I specialize in treating all eating disorder diagnoses, with a particular interest in working with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and work with clients as young as eight years old. In addition to this, I offer general nutrition counseling for a variety of nutrition concerns including but not limited to diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, and sports nutrition using a non-diet, intuitive eating approach that supports clients in developing a healthier, more positive relationship with food.
What truly sets ATX Nutritional Counseling apart is the level of support and connection each client receives. With over a decade of experience working across all levels of eating disorder care, I’m well-equipped to work with high-acuity and complex cases. I’m passionate about providing a wraparound approach to treatment, ensuring that clients not only get the most out of their sessions but also have access to meaningful support between appointments. I intentionally maintain a manageable caseload so that every client receives the attention and care they deserve. My goal is that no one ever feels like just a number on my caseload but feels like they are truly cared for.
AT ATX, we offer in-person sessions in both Georgetown and Austin, TX and virtual sessions across Texas and in select states. If you are unsure if nutritional counseling is right for you, we are always happy to schedule a free discovery call to answer any questions!
