Meet Makeba Waller of Ultraview Imaging in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makeba Waller.

Makeba, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey began over 25 years ago after Desert Storm. I was a Navy hospital corpsman stationed at the Naval Hospital in Camp LeJeune, North Caroline on a Marine base. I worked in an ob/gyne clinic at the time and so many active duty females and dependent wives were getting pregnant and the doctors could not keep up with providing the ultrasounds in a timely manner.

One day, one of the doctors went around the clinic asking if anyone would be interested in learning ultrasound. I was the only person that said yes (if you didn’t know the acronym for NAVY it is NEVER AGAIN VOLUNTEER YOURSELF). I was trained for two weeks and was told what was normal anatomy and that I would eventually figure out what abnormal anatomy was. I had many sleepless nights from the pressure of it all. But my mother told me that I had to make a choice either to sink or swim. I am absolutely grateful that I did, that one decision changed the trajectory of my career.

I decided to get out of the Navy after six years and eventually did go back to school to learn all aspects of sonography. After working for about 4-5 years in clinics and hospitals I had the bright idea to start an ultrasound imaging staffing company. I never took a single business class. I had a burning desire in my heart that propelled me to start a business and FEAR was NEVER an option,

I knew that by having my own company it would allow me to create an environment where every person would be treated with respect and they would be assured that the sonographers performing their exams are qualified and experienced.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was not smooth at all, Google or YouTube was not around. I did not have anyone that I could call for advice that knew anything about business.

I would advise any married couple to always be in agreement. There is so much power in agreement. For example, I opened a 2nd location in Tennessee. I wanted to start the 2nd location immediately but my husband said it wasn’t the right time. I pestered and pestered until he agreed to help me set it up. Oh, how I wish I would have listened because, for three years, I had the biggest headache flying back and forth dealing with incompetent staff.

I think if I would have allowed myself to take a minute to slow down and listen to my husband’s idea about timing that business in Tennessee would have been successful. In the midst of all the difficulties, I reminded myself daily that nothing good comes easy and every NO doesn’t mean NO.
