Meet Makolako Kromah of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makolako Kromah

Hi Makolako, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came up with the concept for ByMasangie as a small business idea in 2020. I made the decision to start my own clothing line since I’ve always loved fashion and was starting to gain recognition for my sense of style. My older sister Masangie Kromah was the first person I ever shared this idea with, and it was her encouragement that kept me going. My sister’s untimely death in 2021 not only devastated me but also strengthened me as I struggled to navigate this new life without her. I wanted everyone to know how much my sister meant to me, so it was only fitting that I named my brand after the one person who saw potential in me and inspired me to pursue it. ByMasangie is not just a brand, it’s my sister’s legacy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If I claimed that owning a clothing brand was easy, I would be lying. My clothing line had a terrible first year. Even though I was new to the game and had little to no experience, I persevered because I had this voice in my head that kept me going and the strongest support system behind me. I lost all motivation for my line when my very first drop performed so poorly. My friends and family were the ones who kept me inspired and positive when I made the decision to take a hiatus from my brand in order to concentrate on my mental health. In early 2024, I started working on my relaunch and returned stronger than ever with a new logo, improved vision, and increased knowledge. I realized I had an opportunity to grow my brand beyond its current size when my second drop sold out entirely.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a 23-year-old entrepreneur and college student. In addition to running a clothing company and doing men’s locs as a side gig, I am a psychology student in college with the goal of earning a license. I am best recognized for my love of fashion, my wit, and my gregarious nature. I take great pride in how I manage any challenge that comes my way; as they say, “pressure makes diamonds,” I am that diamond. My ability to persevere in the face of adversity is what makes me unique; I don’t give myself enough credit for my achievements and development, so here’s to me being the most humblest person ever.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
The power of prayer has played a significant influence in my life and business. I firmly think that without God in my life, none of this would be possible. Because I believe in a higher power, I am fortunate to have what I do and will have. Without God’s help, my business would not be where it is now. Even thought I’m still not where I want to be, I believe that with patience and time I will be running a million dollar company in no time.
