Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Baker.
Hi Mallory, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Like most little girls, I loved being in front of the camera. I would dress up, pose, and want every moment captured. However, as I got older, I realized I liked being behind the lens, not in front of it. My dad bought me my first camera one year for Christmas, and I was hooked. I began this photography journey by going out with two of my friends and creating stories that we could tell through the pictures we took. I’ve recently decided to take this hobby and turn it into a business. My specialties include themed graduation, headshots, special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, and engagements, as well as family photos. I love the freedom, flexibility, and creativity photography allows me and my clients. For the past year, my best friend and I have had this project where we choose a decade and do a photoshoot based on the culture from that time. By doing that, we were able to build a world for the subject in the pictures and let the visuals show what’s going on. That’s what I’m trying to do for my clients. I want to help them get beautiful pictures that show who they are and what they’re wanting to portray.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest part for me was trying to get myself and my work out there for people to see. Also, trying to have some help from family or friends to build my portfolio and show more variety in the types of photos I specialize in was another challenge, but I’ve been able to overcome this recently.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer who loves to make art with my work, no matter what type of photo I take. My specialties include themed, graduation, headshots, special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, and engagements, as well as family photos. What sets me apart from others is some of my more creative work. I love working with props and colored lighting to make a picture look magical and really take the viewer to a whole new world.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I’ve learned how to manage my time between work and my hobbies. That time also allowed me to explore more photography and experiment with different lighting methods and how to transform a location into the perfect set.
