Meet Mallory Gustafson of Hello Poppy Floral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Gustafson.

Mallory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher or a florist. I spent most of my childhood playing school or “taking orders.” I was lucky enough to be an elementary school teacher for the last 10 years. On the side, I always played with flowers- for my own home, for friends, for showers and other celebrations.

I loved the joy I saw on others’ faces when they received an arrangement. I noticed how much happier I was when I had a fresh flower arrangements in my home. I was itching for a change and decided to pursue my passion for flowers full time. I knew if I didn’t go for it now, I would always regret it! Also, my dad is an entrepreneur, so the idea of starting and running my own business has always been something that interests me.

Has it been a smooth road?
Leaving a steady paycheck and a career that I loved was super scary! Starting a business in a field that is unfamiliar is definitely a leap of faith. Running the day to day operations of the same day flower delivery company can be challenging!

If you know of any dependable, kind delivery drivers let me know. My husband, Seth, has been my biggest cheerleader and my wonderful accountant. He handles all of the finances for Hello Poppy, which allows me to be creative, source vintage & unique vases, run the day to day operations, and really listen to what my customers love.

I am still learning and adjusting to meet our customer’s needs while staying at an affordable price point, providing quick service and unique arrangements.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Working all day, I wanted to send my friends a “little hello,” but the flowers I liked were out of my budget or wouldn’t be delivered in time. When I did send flowers, I was often disappointed with the quality of the flowers and service. The bouquets were overpriced and looked generic, arriving in the same glass vase. As a result, I sent Tiff’s Treats, which I love, but sometimes a girl doesn’t want cookies.

I created Hello Poppy Floral Co. to fulfill the need I wished for as a consumer: unique flowers in cute vases at a price point comparable to Tiff’s Treats. Through easy online ordering, I offer same day, future and subscription flower arrangements delivered to your door with a smile. I want to simplify bringing fresh flowers into your living space or help you make someone’s day. I believe beautiful flowers should be for every day not just for special occasions or events.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Everyone knows that DFW is growing quickly. The people of Dallas are incredibly kind, thoughtful and love to give to each other. That makes for the perfect recipe to start an online flower delivery company.

Hello Mrs. Gustafson, I’m in 6th grade now, but I still miss your encouraging and engaging smile, your wonderful laugh, and your joyful and cheerful attitude toward everyone you know, you were always so kind and warm-hearted, Hamilton Park is growing so much and we all wish you would come visit. (if you are going to come visit I personally would prefer sometime between now and May, since that’s when I would still be there) I miss you so much! GOOD LUCK WITH HANDLING YOUR BUSINESS! Lots of love, Carissa 🙂
