Today we’d like to introduce you to Mamdouh Khayat and Mouyyad Abdulhadi.
Pax & Beneficia is the culmination of a lifelong dream of two beloved friends with a penchant for coffee. Co-founders Mouyyad Abdulhadi, a marketing executive, and Dr. Mamdouh Khayat, an interventional radiologist, were on vacation in Scandinavia, hiking the brutal mountainous landscape and unwinding in one of the many impressive contemporary coffee shops. It was on that trip–on a train from Stockholm to Oslo–that the idea of coffee retail entrepreneurship was born, ultimately resulting in the Pax & Beneficia coffee shop that opened in the Las Colinas neighborhood of Irving, Texas. Reinforcing the concept that coffee transcends boundaries, our shop exudes Scandinavian inspiration with subtleties of Arabesque design.
The name Pax & Beneficia translates to “peace & blessings” in Latin. We certainly hope to make our coffee shop a place of peace and blessings for our team, patrons, and community.
Has it been a smooth road?
From conception, it certainly was difficult, yet gratifying to convert our thoughts into a tangible shop that epitomized our core principles–craftsmanship, camaraderie, contribution. From formulation of the architectural blueprint to the customization of a La Marzocco espresso machine to selection of a reputable local roaster, our objective was to stay true to these principles. Struggles were certainly encountered as we started construction, formalized operational protocols, and strove to impart an impacting culture on our team. We are incredibly grateful that the Irving community has welcomed us unhesitatingly despite these struggles.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We serve all the essential coffee drinks expected at an upscale, independently owned coffee shop, including drips, pour overs, cold brews, and a variety of espresso-based drinks. What sets us apart is the addition of Turkish coffee. To make and serve the Turkish coffee, we use equipment sourced from Turkey and finely ground coffee that is blended with cardamom.
For the rest of the coffee menu, the roasted beans are supplied by San Antonio-based Merit Coffee and prepared by Hario V60 for pourovers or by La Marzocco Strada EE for espresso, with grinding help from Mahlkönig Peaks and an EK43.
Also unique to us is our home crafted syrup recipes to complement our espresso drinks. Be it cardamom, lavender, or rosemary, we make them weekly in the shop using fresh ingredients.
We are proud to be able to bring these varieties of coffee drinks and unique flavors to our community in Irving.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is a phenomenal place for an independently-owned business like ours. The cultural diversity and craving for local well-crafted, unique offerings can undoubtedly translate into small business success. We are incredibly grateful that the Irving community has welcomed us unhesitatingly.
