Today we’d like to introduce you to Manal Fashi.
Manal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always imagined myself growing up to be an artist since I was young. I can’t remember a time I wasn’t making art and thriving in it. When I went to university, I pursued graphic design so I could have a creative career with a reliable income. From graduation, my focus and energies have gone there, but more recently, I’ve picked up the habit of sketching in watercolor. It started as a hobby while I was traveling overseas, but it’s grown into a medium I’m pursuing professionally.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well I’m still at the beginning of the road, I think, so I’m sure there will be plenty of struggles to come. With that said, juggling a full time job and growing as a professional artist has been difficult in the area managing time well.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a watercolor artist that enjoys painting landscapes, portraits and florals, and from time to time, I paint en Plein air (direct painting outside). My style of painting can be identified mostly with realism, with some influence of impressionism. I have a hard time limiting myself to a few subjects in art, and I love the watercolor medium because it has a life of its own. What I think sets me apart as an artist is my use of color and negative space.
I’m most proud of the variety in my compositions and my desire to continue to learn and grow as an artist. My favorite part of being an artist is sharing the joys of visual expression and beauty of light and color with others.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started this dive into watercolor earlier if I knew how fun and rewarding it is to be a watercolor artist.
