Meet Marco Flores and Sabath Trejo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marco Flores and Sabath Trejo.

Marco and Sabath, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2014 Marco and Maira worked at a local camera and photo finishing establishment and very quickly realized that management there lacked respect for their employees, and therefore created a very hostile work environment, an environment where you had to “kiss” your way to respect rather than be valued for your work.

A very impulsive idea was discussed one day amongst Marco & Maira (who at this time we’re married) “If you are a photo lab technician and I am a surprisingly decent camera salesman why don’t we start our own photo lab?”

This idea was extremely spontaneous as well as extremely foolish, due to the lack of experience and fierce competition in this particular industry, none the less, personal daily driver vehicles were sold, a very dear friend who now owns his own web developing firm aconcagua.io assisted in getting us a custom website built within 5 days! , extremely kind friends and family pitched in and Fort Worth Photo Lab was born! off to entrepreneurship we went. Sabath a longtime friend of mine helped us purchase equipment when funds became obsolete and a few months later he became a business partner. Sabath was not fully involved and had a full-time job in the corporate world, as the business continued to grow every day he became more and more involved.

All this began back in November of 2014 in the corner a small shopping center where with the help of the internet people began coming in through the door. In April of 2015, we came across the opportunity to move to our current location, a bigger space with a functional darkroom, the ability to display a gallery and film cameras retail space. We have now expanded our services and involvement with the local artist community.

The idea behind the lab was to provide the opportunity for local photographers to expo their creative work to the community. It can be so difficult for artists to get their name and work out there etc.

About once per month, we host a gallery called “The Lab Collective”. We select a few local artists, print their work, and all proceeds go to the artists. It’s a great opportunity for artists to gain visibility, people to network, take home some prints, have a bite to eat and a few drinks, etc.

Our photo lab is for everyone, though! We pride ourselves on providing friendly and professional imaging services. We understand the value of pictures and want to help make everyone’s memories last for generations to come.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been the smoothest ride but a rewarding and positive learning experience most definitely. The struggles have been what we believe if not the same, similar to what most first time business owner faces such as late nights finishing large orders, meeting deadlines, fixing and troubleshooting equipment implementing new ideas and failing.
