Meet Marcy Benson of The RoseMary Barn Wedding Venue in Mckinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Benson.

Marcy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Everyone always asks me if building a venue was a dream of ours! The answer may surprise you! But… NO, NO and NO, we actually own a real estate company and were extremely happy and busy with just that! In 2011, five years prior to building a friend from out of state contacted me and wanted to look at land (hopefully a barn already on it) here in a Texas to potentially live here and rent the barn out for weddings.

My friend flew into town and we did go out driving to look at land as far out as Pottsboro! She left and we never really talked about it to much after. A few years later we purchased this property as an investment property with no intentions of living here and for sure no intentions of opening a wedding venue. (buying this property has an entire story of its own that I will share another time) Well ironically, my friend (YES same Friend) calls me looking for a venue close to the Mckinney area because her daughter was getting married and wanted a central location between her fiancés family in Dallas and her family in Oklahoma AND wanted to get married in three months. After calling every place I could think of and getting a “not available” response every single time, I offered this property that we had bought the year before for her daughter’s wedding.

After tons and tons of RAIN that year, I had to call my friend and tell her that there was NO WAY we could have an outside wedding unless we were going to sit in row boats. (not sure if that’s what I really said) but, needless to say, we were in a desperate situation trying to find a last-minute venue. She was finally able to secure another venue and get change of address slips sent out in time for her daughter’s wedding. After we finally got through all of this, I knew we needed to entertain the idea of building a venue. We started sketching out plans around the old pole barn and started building in 2016 and finished in 2017.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been awesome!
