Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Garcia.
Marcy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first started Marcy’s Banners back in 2014, I remember for my oldest daughters first birthday I got all of her party decorations made by someone, I remember telling my mom, “Mom, I could’ve done this myself”. From her 2nd birthday in 2014 up until now, I’ve been doing almost all her decorations. Then friends and family started asking if I could do their decorations, and that’s how Marcy’s Banners happened. I didn’t make an actual page to promote myself up until 2016, I think 2018 is when I started being booked almost every week and that has got me to where I am today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Business-wise if has been smooth I’d say, there have been learning points with clients and learning to master my craft through feedback from others. I remember the struggle was very real when I first started, I was working in fast food and I was a single mom to a precious girl, my oldest Leah, doing this on the side was nice extra cash for the both of us, but a lot of sleepless nights, I did everything by hand, I cut/draw but it was so worth it, I look back now and I say “Man, I should’ve got my hands on that Cricut machine years ago”. I didn’t get my hands on one until the beginning of last year (2019) and it’s been a lifesaver, it has allowed me to do so much more. At the moment I think I just struggle with promoting myself, posting my work, and interacting on social media, I feel like I have no time but that’s something I am working on.
Marcy’s Banners – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Marcy’s Banners does a little bit of everything for your party/baby shower. I make centerpieces, banners, baby shower mums, sashes, cake toppers, cupcake toppers, cut-outs and so on, we also recently started renting pallet walls, goodie bag stands and we plan to add more inventory this year. At the moment I want to say I specialize in maternity sashes, that’s one of my most requested items and I think that’s what I’m known for too, that and banners. Sometimes I’m out somewhere and my friends introduce me and people are like “Oh you’re Marcy the one that makes banners”.
I think what I am most proud of is that most of my clients are returning clients or people that are referred by previous clients, it’s an amazing feeling, I am also very proud of the way I juggle my small business, my full-time job as an optician, and 24/7 mom life, it can be hectic but it’s so worth it. I do it all with the help of my husband who’s my biggest supporter, he and my parents help me out so much. Marcy’s Banners has definitely grown from when it first started, these past two years have been the busiest for me. What sets me apart from others would probably be that I put my heart into this, yeah the extra money is nice but when you do something you truly enjoy and love doing it’s not all about the money, I want to perfect your order so that you’ll love it. When I’m making these orders it’s like a whole peaceful little world I’m in.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about my hometown, if we’re speaking about Dallas I’d say what I like best is all the food places and things to do with your family. Traffic is my least favorite! Lol
