Meet Marie Sena of Restorative Tattooing by Marie Sena, M.A., 3D Areola Tattoo Specialist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Sena.

Marie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a professional tattoo artist and medical illustrator of over 10 years. After receiving my Master’s Degree in Medical Illustration from UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2008, I began tattooing full time while doing freelance illustration work for medical professionals here in Dallas.

Through my interactions as an illustrator at hospitals here in Dallas, I became aware of how my unique skill set of tattooing and anatomical knowledge could make a difference for women who had survived breast cancer. I began to explore the possibilities, and haven’t looked back.

I now work with plastic surgeons, oncologists, breast surgeons, and nurses throughout the DFW area to create realistic 3D areolas for women who have gone through breast cancer reconstruction. My work is quite literally their final step in the reconstructive process.

I do my best to approach each project is with great care, using color theory, light and shadow, and symmetry to create the most realistic effect possible. My goal is to help restore confidence and improve the lives of the women that I work with. I hope to give them back a little of what they have lost and to help them feel complete again.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have absolutely been struggles. I had some uncertainty in the beginning: “Could I do this?” “This is a heavy responsibility, am I up to it?”, etc. I think the biggest obstacle I had to overcome was the self-doubting voice that came up every so often. I remind myself that I am a confident, capable tattoo artist who has women that are depending on her to help them close the book on a painful chapter of their lives. That is motivating to me every day.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Restorative Tattooing by Marie Sena, M.A., 3D Areola Tattoo Specialist – what should we know?
I provide restorative tattooing for women who have gone through breast cancer and reconstruction. After breast reconstruction, the shape is complete, but the new breast does not have an areola. I specialize in creating 3D areola tattoos, which look like a normal areola, only the tattoo is on completely flat skin. It’s a trompe l’oeil effect, where the light and shadow of the pigment is tricking your eye into thinking that something is 3-dimensional when in fact, it is not. Areola tattooing can significantly help the emotional healing process after recovering from breast cancer.

I’m most proud of the look that I get on my client’s faces when they get to see their new areolas for the first time. There are always smiles, and sometimes there are tears, but it is always a golden moment of relief and happiness. It makes my day.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I truly care about each and every one of my clients- I want them to have my absolute best work, so I try to work extra hard to connect with them, make them feel comfortable, and give them the most realistic tattoo possible. I want this to be a 100% positive experience.
