Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Pomaro.
Marina and her husband Mark acquired the Russian Banya of Dallas in June of 2015 (this place been around for 10 years already). The couple purchased Banya from its original owner in order to keep the spa and Eastern- European restaurant “Volga” open to Dallas community. “Banya” means a bath house and Russian Banya of Dallas, the only one of its kind in all Texas. It combines SPA and restaurant together in one building and offers world famous Slavic Hospitality, relaxing atmosphere, health benefits and delicious food.
New to the restaurant business, Marina, a native Russian, believes that by creating a unique, exceptional experience for guests—whether it be a lovely lunch, a family dinner, watch parties or special events, the Russian Banya of Dallas can become even more of an indispensable fixture in and gathering spot for the community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every business is difficult and especially restaurant business. As I mentioned before, this place was around for 10 years before we purchased it, it’s never been updated, so we have done some updates and remodels. Also, we improved customer service and our recipes. The most struggle, I guess, it’s our location. In my opinion, it’s hidden from popular places and not many people know about us.
Russian Banya of Dallas and Restaurant Volga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At our restaurant we prepare healthy homemade food. You can’t find anything like this in DFW metroplex area. For your good taste, we offer you extraordinary world of flavors Russian, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Georgian and other European dishes made from scratch. All our recipes, including deserts, bread and some drinks are made here by our chef.
Banya – an old Russian custom and, from medieval times, a national institution, the banya has been around for more than a thousand years. The heart of our establishment is our banya, which is the only such facility opens to the public in the United States that is heated (up to 220°F and 60% humidity) by a wood-burning stove. The Russian Banya of Dallas also offers guests a dry Finnish sauna (heated up to 180°F 10% humidity) that provides a milder heat. In addition, we offer a Turkish steam room (heated to 110°F, with 100% humidity) that makes use of soothing moisture to heat the body evenly.
Lastly, we offer a cold plunge, which, at 42-45°, is a substitute for the snow bath (or “dip”) in a frozen river that traditionally concludes a banya session— a thoroughly invigorating part of the cleansing process that is not to be missed. Also, we take an appointment for a flogging session called a venik treatment. This is a massage with bunches of oak or birch twigs soaked in warm water. This releases stress and is very good for the skin, as it exfoliates the skin. It’s a ritual known for its healing powers
All of our saunas are co-ed, as is our lounge area, which seats up to 60 people.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me are happy customers who come back to us and bring their friends.
