Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Herron.
Mark, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I owned a design/build Real Estate Investment and Home Building company in Austin for 25 years. Primary focus was speculative commercial and residential redevelopment and new home construction with an emphasis on creating modern designs and floor plans, which included the repurposing and modernizing of existing buildings and the construction of new and existing homes.
A self-taught doodling, artist and painter, I have applied my creative leanings in construction design, custom cars, motorcycles and artistic painting. I have worked as a fashion, print and runway model for 40 years and the creative industries associated with the advertising and fashion industry. I am still a model represented by the Kim Dawson Agency. I am now pursuing art as one of my primary endeavors.
Has it been a smooth road?
I feel fortunate to have had both success and the ability to be creative in my previous business ventures. The business side of the art world is challenging. Placing a value on a purely creative expression is both intimidating and fulfilling. It is a challenge to know if an expressive, passionate piece of personally created art will be valued by others in a monetary sense.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I work from my home studio. Painting larger canvas is my preferred application. Much of my work is done with patinated acrylic applied by multi-layering with squeegee and or bush. I also used combinations of charcoal and acrylic.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
DFW is a great place for creative people. The socio-economic diversity and both community and philanthropic support for the arts is plentiful. Covid has changed the world as we knew it and the art market has unfortunately taken a back seat as people are financially burdended and the logistics of studio, gallery and museum access has been effected. Texas has such a large and diverse business economy and a growing popularity for both business and personal relocations. DFW is one of the leading metro areas on the rebound and hopefully, the creative and art world will see a strong resurgence. Dallas and Forth Worth have inspiring world-class architecture in their museums and it sets a tone of creativity that spreads to many aspects of the cities and their creative culture.
