Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Reyes.
Martha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Very hard …. complicated and with a lot of bumps on the way ……that’s how I started this business.
I always wanted to start a business that will give me a sense of independency and security on the long term.
The hard side of it is that I didn’t have any clue on how or where to start but once I did my research it was a little easier.
The complicated part was to find the right suppliers. Price, quantities and credit can be a bump on the way when you don’t know how to deal with that ……and I learned it firsthand.
The name of Tina&Martha comes from my name, of course, and my sister’s name Tina. She gave me some tips on how to work with different fabrics since she has been working on the sewing business for many years.
I have worked very hard to get here, to put my business name out there and to bring costumers to my website. With three kids and a full-time job it can get very overwhelming but at the end of the day I feel happy to be where I am and to have what I have ……with my kids working on my own business.
So after almost two years I am here, with lots of fabrics and a lot of energy to work on what I really want and pursuit but most important living the dream of having my own business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To find suppliers, to get customer, with no customer you have no sales, no sales no business. Pricing my items was a task too, you have to compete with a lot of other similar products but still have a fear price. I can say that my prices are very competitive and the fabrics I use are a very excellent quality.
Please tell us about Tina & Martha Custom Sewing.
I make blankets, pillowcases, pillows and throws.
Almost all of my products can be customized, Pillowcases is one of the most popular items on my website. I use Minky (polyester) fabric and cotton fabric.
The fact that I have built this company from scratch and learned in the process as I did it, have make me feel proud of myself and on every step of the way I tell myself I can do more and improve even on the smallest details.
What sets me apart from other companies that makes or sells similar products is the quality and price of my products. I offer under average prices so everyone that likes to have an ultra-soft and snuggle blanket or a customized pillowcase will be able to afford it.
My motto is “Meet or Exceed” and I apply that to every item I make.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think, choose an easier business name so people can remember it more easily 🙂
