Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Cone.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a registered nurse so caring and nurturing comes natural to me. Throughout my clinical experience, I learned I had a strong passion for the adult/geriatric population. I tried to figure out how I could further assist people in my own way so I created a business for people in need that would allow me to make a difference in the community.
I spoke with my husband about the idea of boarding homes and with him donating to the homeless every year and also having such a big heart, he supported my vision one hundred percent. I also consulted with some friends that were operating boarding homes for further guidance, did my research and in August of 2018, Home For You, LLC was established.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I must say it has come with some challenges and definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but I won’t complain because nothing in life worth having comes without hardwork, sacrifice, dedication, and a few bumps in the road. Every opportunity, including this, has provided insight and growth and as a business owner, I am grateful. Working full-time, being a full-time mom on top of having a dream and trying to start and run a business, also came with challenges. At the beginning, trying to figure out how to set boundaries for the business that included my everyday personal life was difficult. There were many long nights and weekends with getting the home together, and making sure that the home was in compliance with the city of Dallas Dept. of code compliance services for boarding home facilities. Once the home was full, another challenge I faced was trying to manage several individuals under one roof, with different personalities and coming to a common ground with everyone during disagreements. You would be amazed of the ideas you can put into place to make sure it remains neutral but we managed.(LOL) I will say my residents are great and there has been some bumpy roads but that is to be expected when you have six individuals under one roof. We continue to learn and grow together and it’s working.
Home For You LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Home For You, LLC is a boarding home that rents shared rooms to individuals. The goal is to help those in need find a place to call home while offering affordable housing. It may be someone that is homeless, transitioning from being incarcerated, have mental disabilities, a veteran, or someone on a fixed income and can’t afford the everyday daily expenses. We take pride in providing clean facilities, timely response to urgent needs and treating our residents with respect and kindness and offering a family-like environment. Services are free such as phone, wifi, cable. We also provide medication assistance, snacks, a furnished living room, bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom, all household supplies, light housework, on-site laundry room and we’re near the dart bus line for easy transportation access. I’m proud that Home For You, LLC is truly a place where your loved one is treated like family and not just a slogan. We celebrate birthdays and holidays as a family. I also sometimes get requests from residents, most recently asking me for clothes, and driver handbooks.
Through the support of family and friends who have provided clothes, I was able to bless the residents and fulfill their request by providing clothes. I was able to print out the driver handbooks for the residents to work on getting their driver license. This is what gives me pleasure in knowing I can help them fulfill their dreams. What sets me apart from others is I don’t just provide a place to stay but I listen to my residents and try to assist them as much as possible. If they would like to stay at Home For You, LLC forever, I would be fine with that but if they have a plan and need guidance, I will do whatever I can to help them reach their full potential and goals in life. Just knowing I had a part of helping them along the way gives me great pleasure.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me can come in different ways. When you realize your purpose, you have truly succeeded. My success is when the residents tell me, “Mrs. Mary, this is one of the best homes I have ever set foot in and I will be here for a while. When my caseworker says see you in 90 and you passed all your compliances (LOL) and when I’m constantly told that I have one of the cleanest boarding homes.
It does my heart good and makes me proud that I’m living out my dream. I’m happy to announce that Home For You, LLC, second boarding home will be opening in June, less than a year from being established. I know that my dream is not in vain and have accomplished what I set out do.
