Meet Mary DeMuth of MaryDeMuth.com in Rockwall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary DeMuth.

Mary, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started writing in the early 1990s where I honed my craft, wrote curriculum and ad copy, and learned how to self-edit and write persuasive copy. We moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 2000 where my husband attended Dallas Theological Seminary. During that stint, I pursued publication, landing my first freelance job with a local Rowlett paper. Before we moved our family to France in 2004, a literary agent picked me up. I sold two parenting books around that time, and then started writing 3 books a year for publication. I also continued to do motivational speaking around the metroplex, USA and the world. We moved back to the Rockwall area in 2007, where I continued my publishing career. Currently, I’ve published over 35 books. I mentor writers at BookLaunchMentor.com and the Rockwall Christian Writers group (www.rcwg.blogspot.com), and I podcast (the Restory Show). My business is a combination of writing, producing, speaking, and mentoring.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The publishing business is not easy to break into, and it’s also very fickle. You have to sell well for publishers to continue to give you a contract. So relying on publishers hasn’t been simple or easy. In terms of writers block, that’s not really been an issue for me. I believe writing is a muscle, and the more you exercise it, the better you get at it. I can now write a book in about five weeks.

Getting speaking engagements, I’ve found come mostly through my relationships and word of mouth. One obstacle has been pursuing speaking gigs by cold calling. That hasn’t been my sweet spot.

Podcasting has a big learning curve, but I’m grateful for the change in medium and a new way to disseminate encouraging content.

MaryDeMuth.com – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is me. I specialize in creating content–whether books, articles, video, or audio. I also mentor writers toward publication. I’ve learned a lot in this business, and can help writers streamline the process. Now that people can easily self-publish on Amazon, I have found a lot of joy shepherding authors through that endeavor.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Getting that first book contract. Once that happened, everything else started to click. But it took a good ten years before that happened.
