Meet Masa Lopez of Masa Muzik in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Masa Lopez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Masa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I found out I could rhyme and put words together while writing a poem in 6th grade for a class assignment. I wrote a short poem that got a good response from my class. A good friend of mine Shane Windham encouraged me to keep writing and showed me how to structure my poem so people could read them and understand them better. As I got older the things a was writing about in my poetry changed and another friend of mine told me it sounded like I was rapping when I would read my poems to him and all I needed was a beat. I never thought of rapping until then and when I discovered Latino rappers from Texas it really motivated me to go for but I didn’t take it as serious till 2012 when it really started picking up for me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was not a smooth road at all. I didn’t know anything about how to write music or how to count bars and I struggled a lot with writing hooks and I still do. A lot of people didn’t take me serious when I first started and I really had to show my self how to rap so I practiced every chance I got. Back then I was a kid and broke not a lot of people I knew had studios so I would record my self on a karaoke machine using other peoples instrumentals. I was 17 when I recorded my first song on a home studio and I thought I had made it lol but it was only the beginning.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I started Masa Muzik in 2016 with the help of my Manager Marcus Washington AKA Milla Da Mayor it was a way for me to brand my self and my music. I had been apart of other record labels in the past and I was already putting together shows and promoting events with local artist and venues but I wanted to focus on my self so I teamed with my Manager and Pit Stop Collectives which is his Company and I started putting all my time and money into building my brand and partnership with him. I’m known for my music as Masa Lopez and I’m more behind the scenes with the event planning and promotions but I plan on eventually managing other artists when I can focus on them.

I feel like my grind sets me apart from others I have learned so much from being an independent artist and If one day I decided to hang up my mic I feel like I can help artist by sharing what I have learned through my experiences. I am most proud of how far I have come with music I have been able to do shows and make music with artist I grew up listening to, as a kid I dreamed about stuff like this but I never would have never believed it if you told me then would I would accomplish.

What were you like growing up?
I was a wild kid and I hated school, looking back now I was lost I should have listened to my coaches and teachers that told me to stay in school to this day that is my biggest regret so KIDS STAY IN SCHOOL. I was a bit of a trouble maker but not a criminal lol I was really into music I was about 14 when I started trying to rap.
