Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Delp.
Mason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was a freshman in high school, I started out my musical journey playing guitar for my church. Music had always been a passion for me, but I never really saw it as anything to pursue outside of singing really loudly in a car until I picked up an instrument. As soon as I did, I immediately fell in love and became obsessed with any and everything music-related. I started learning piano and bass along with the guitar, diving into music theory, and trying to make my music taste as diverse as I could. I began songwriting soon after, playing everywhere that would take me. Years passed, and since then, I’ve traveled all over America playing Christian music for worship conferences and on other stages for my own songs. I began to record my music and release it on Apple Music and Spotify. I am currently working on producing and releasing my debut EP.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being in the music business hasn’t always been the easiest journey. Like any other self-funded musician knows, your vision for what you want career-wise is far from what you can actually afford to pay for. I wanted so badly to record as much music as I possibly could to the highest quality, but costs and reliance on other people always seemed to limit me as to what I could do in the time frame I wanted. Then I got one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received: “If you really want something done, you have to learn how to do it yourself”. I had heard this hundreds of times, but it never really hit through to my heart until I realized that was the mentality I needed for myself.
So I started taking on odd jobs to try and financially support my career and learn what all I could do on my own. That took me to many places I never imagined myself being in (at one point I was working in the Arctic Circle on the north shore of Alaska doing oilfield construction so I could afford to make my own home studio), but the lessons I’ve learned have given me such a strong perspective on my music and life in general that I’d do it all again if I had to.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a self-funded musician, so I play hired gigs and I also teach guitar, piano, & bass lessons with around 20 students and plenty of room for more! However, I’m most known for my own music. I think something that really sets me apart is my stubborn mentality to be able to be as independent as possible. Not to say of course, that I don’t have mentors and people who contribute to me and my career, but I firmly believe in an individualistic perspective when it comes to the music industry.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think the music industry as a whole has been going through a digital revolution. There’s been a technological boom that’s allowed for previously unheard sounds. As a result people have created new styles and genres, such as modern electronic music. On top of that the explosion of internet based-fame has caused more and more artists to step away from the common mold of building your success. I think this trend will only increase in popularity. Since anyone can make music on their own now, we will continue to see more and more “own home” artists rising into fame and stardom.
