Today we’d like to introduce you to Mateeka Quinn.
Mateeka, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2011, I was a part-time Journalist interviewing restaurant owners, entrepreneurs and creatives for small newspapers and blogs. I loved telling stories, especially those of people who multi-tasked their way to success. In 2015, I switched from newspaper writing to a job as a corporate Copywriter—still helping passionate people launch and grow their side-hustle businesses as a freelancer. In 2017, I joined forces with a small team of Copywriting geniuses and Graphic Design gurus to launch Imperium Content (our very own passion project!)
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Since our launch, we’ve dealt with challenges left and right, from building our site to finding (and frankly keeping!) customers! Learning how to price-balance ourselves, build creative contracts, and manage join funds has been a challenge. Finding a way to really get the agency off the ground while continuing working in other areas, and even converting some of our existing clients to the Imperium Content family—these are all challenges we’ve faced. Luckily, we’ve been able to learn from the best (and Google is a great help, too!)
Please tell us about Imperium Content.
Imperium Content is all about the little guy. Our customers are self-starters, entrepreneurs, and small teams with big dreams. They are DIY-ers, who have brought their business from just an idea to a functioning organization with their bare hands (and maybe some other tools, too.) As a marketing agency, we build beautiful websites, write compelling blogs, and run powerful advertisements on the web. We help with branding and launching for new businesses, and offer convenient packages for those that have more traction. We combine our services so our clients can get everything they need at once, based on their goals. What really helps us stand out? Our one-on-one client relationships. Like I said, our clients are all about the DIY. They like to be hands-on! We keep them in the loop and teach as we operate. We help our clients leave the tough stuff to the experts, so they can just focus on working with their own clients—not chasing us down.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I were to start over again today, I would definitely make sure to seek professional help when we needed it. Like I said, we were DIY-ers just like our clients—we just had experience in marketing! We had to learn a lot of things the hard way, and we continue to. I wish we would have paid a consultant early on to help us truly identify our market, their budget, and our price planning. That would have solved many a-headache in the beginning.
