Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Burk.
Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Matt Burk Music Studio began in 2006. I was looking to change careers, and as an entrepreneur was looking for a business to embark upon. I had always been very passionate about music and felt this was a perfect fit for me.
I began teaching piano lessons from my home in 2006. Shortly after doing so, I had the vision to begin offering lessons for other instruments as well. This led me to move lessons out of my home and into a commercial space with 4 teaching rooms. I hired some very talented friends of mine to come on board, and we were then able to offer drum, guitar, and bass lessons in addition to piano lessons.
Within a year, we were completely full and need to find a larger studio space. We were able to stay in the same complex but move to a space that was twice as big.
In 2013 we opened our second studio in Frisco, Tx. My desire in starting Matt Burk Music Studios was not to create just another place where students could learn how to play an instrument. I wanted to create a truly unique environment for students to have a fun, creative and inspiring experience centered around their passions in music.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with most new companies, there was certainly “growing pains” during the maturation process for us. We went through some moments when we weren’t sure what the future of the studio held, but we are definitely glad we saw the process through.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Matt Burk Music Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
Our primary goal as a studio is to make sure that our students are reaching their goals in music and having fun doing so!
We have a very fun, positive and engaging student-focused culture. We believe that there’s no such thing as too much positive reinforcement. We encourage our students and help them to understand that they have what it takes to reach their goals in music and have fun doing so!
One of the aspects of our studio that I’m proud of is that we offer excellent private lessons tailored to the student’s specific interests, goal, and passions in music. Basically, we want to find out what excites and inspires our students musically – this is our starting point. Once we know what motivates our students, then we formulate a lesson plan within that context.
We also have a host of inspiring performance opportunities and programs (both solo and ensemble) for our students to continue to be inspired by as they grow into skilled musicians and confident performers. We offer fun and exciting performance opportunities to engage our students with at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, and at the House of Blues Dallas!
In addition to our Recital and Showcase, we also do Live Gigs, Jam Sessions, MBMS Bands, and Masterclasses. We believe that we offer a comprehensive approach to music education that is done in a fun and encouraging environment with the students at the center!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck, but I feel that we were certainly very fortunate and blessed to have started our first studio in Allen, Tx. Allen has been a very welcoming city and we have felt the support of the community from the start.
Frisco Tx has also been a very welcoming city to us and the arts.
