Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Morriss.
Hi Matt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As with many professional brewers, my journey started with a love of craft beer and an interest in homebrewing. I started brewing beer in my backyard in 2004, and by 2006, I had started entering home brew competitions. Some friends and I founded the Horsemen of the Hopocalypse homebrew club in 2007, which is still going strong. By 2012, we were still hooked on making great beer, and that year, Tom Anderson, Laron Cheek, and I decided to make the jump over to the pro side. After a bit of formal brewery education, we opened Rabbit Hole Brewing in Justin in 2013, making lots of great friends and award-winning beer there for 6 years before changing business and market conditions forced us to close in 2019.
About that time, we were approached by a group with business ties to Texas that was interested in opening a brewery with a customer experience more akin to what is commonly found in some of the more craft-beer focused regions in California and Colorado. They were fans of our beer at Rabbit Hole and wanted to build a large, inviting place to drink it. We began discussing details, and in 2020, I started working with them to design and build what we hoped would become a new paradigm for craft beer in North Texas.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, anything worth doing comes with some struggles. Our experiences at Rabbit Hole taught us the importance of marketing and advertising, as well as the challenges involved with working with a 3rd party distributor. We started executing our vision for Three Wide Brewing in February of 2020 and were immediately slapped with a global pandemic and a worldwide supply chain shortage, which turned what was supposed to be an 18-month build into a 4-year saga of trying to get the brewery open. There are always plenty of obstacles to overcome when trying to build something grand, but you tackle them one at a time, and eventually, you run out of things standing in your way.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are DFW’s newest craft brewery, focused on delivering outstanding craft beer and a beautiful tavern in which to enjoy it. While we make all sorts of beer, we focus primarily on three different styes– IPAs, Lagers, and Barrel Aged beers. We’ll be distributing these all over the Metroplex in both kegs and cans to ensure our beer is always close at hand. We’ve also built a world-class brewery in North Fort Worth near the Texas Motor Speedway with a huge, modern tap room featuring plenty of TVs, ample seating, and some fantastic food options to pair with your beer. Our taproom features multiple IPA and Lager options, as well as light beers, dark beers, and everything in between. Our initial distributed beers include our Everyday Pilsner, High Groove Rye IPA, and Outer Groove Hazy IPA. These three beers, plus a growing list of seasonal offerings, will soon be available at beer retailers all over DFW.
Alright, so before we go, can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
We love making beer, and we love sharing it with people who love drinking it. The easiest way to support us is to ask your local bar or retailer to carry our beer and order it once they do. Grab a 6-pack to go and share it with friends– beer is better with friends.
