Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Powell and Doug Martin of Moroch. Matt Powell is the Chief Integrated Media Officer and leads all paid, owned and earned media services, including media planning, digital/social and public relations. Doug Martin is the Chief Brand Management and Development Officer and spearheads new business efforts as well as all aspects of client service.
Matt and Doug, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Matt: I got into advertising by accident. I had taken a college course on ad sales and thought it was fun. When searching for a job, I answered an ad in a newspaper (probably the last one who did that) and it turned out to be a media planning and buying shop called Gugel that worked on brands like Neiman Marcus and Cici’s Pizza. My first responsibilities included ensuring the owner of the company’s office was sparkling clean and cleaning the litter boxes for the 7 cats that roamed the office. No jobs have seemed hard after that.
From there, I worked in Fort Worth for a short stint before ending up at Moroch 16 years ago. I never expected to stay in one place as long as I have. However, there are two criteria I have for my job that Moroch continuously meets: 1) each day is different than the last and 2) you can follow your passions in an entrepreneurial way.
Doug: I went to the University of Oklahoma thinking I wanted to be a Geologist of all things. After about 10 minutes into my first class, I realized that classifying sediment wasn’t for me. I took a career assessment test and advertising was one of the recommendations. Ten minutes into that intro class I knew I found what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Almost 30 years later, I’ve never regretted a minute of it. I spent nearly 20 years with The Richards Group (over two stints). I also spent a number of years on the West coast working at Wieden + Kennedy and Leagas~Delaney. I’ve been lucky to work on over 150 brands over that time. I’m in my fourth year at Moroch and couldn’t be happier. Our independent attitude has led to a large number of new business wins recently.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Matt Powell: Advertising is not an easy or smooth profession. It has never been, but the last 5-10 years have seen disruption like never before. Every day you are earning your client’s business, and to do that, you must learn something new every day.
Doug Martin: It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. That’s advertising. We look for optimists at Moroch. How you face adversity and change is the true measure of a person. Life would be boring if it was the same every day.
