Meet Matthew Wohlkinger of Cake-Aholics Bakery in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Wohlkinger.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Matthew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started baking with my great grandmother, we would bake cookies all the time for holidays and get to gathers. Once she passed away I started baking more challenging desserts with my grandmother Madelane. We would make trifles filled with custards and jelly’s and rich chocolate cakes smothered in ganache frosting, anything sweet and delicious you betcha we made it 🙂 After a few years my family moved to the United States and that’s when I attended Le Cordon Blue, a French pastry school in Dallas TX. I attended Le Cordon Blue for 2 years and that’s when I discovered my love for all things pastry:) after graduating I worked at several bakery’s and cake shops doing the thing I loved most, cake decorating. Two years after working in the industry I decided to branch out on my own and finally open my own shop, now 4 years and 6 employees later Cake-Aholics Bakery is still going strong 🙂

Has it been a smooth road?
This has definitely not been and easy road. I quit my job and decided to branch out on my own….hahahha nobody tells you how much more work is involved in owning your own business, or how much money it takes to start one from ground zero. After several weeks of disappointment finding out all the requirements a building has to have and what all you need to open a bakery. I almost gave up on my dream. After a while of being discouraged I met a lovely home baker who got me motivated again to just start baking at home as a side job. I soon decide to just start out of my house and slowly build a client base and save every penny I could.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
What sets us apart is definitely our creativity and willingness to take on a challenge. My philosophy is to always say yes and figure it out later. When we tackle on a cake that we have never done before we discover so many new techniques and stay innovative and on track with trends. I love creating and so cake decorating is a perfect fit for me. I love my job. I come to work and get to be creative every day. We are known for having unique flavors and super delicious cakes at the store, some of our unique flavor combinations such as our lavender and honey and lemon and rose flavored cake and cupcakes always raise an eyebrow, but once you try it you won’t want to stop. We always stay innovative with flavors and designs and I think that’s what separates us from your average bakery.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Arlington is a great city! Everyone has been so welcoming to our business and wanting to see us succeed. I would definitely recommend Arlington as a great location to new businesses.
