Meet Maureen Beville of Dwell Yoga Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maureen Beville.

Hi Maureen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I own Dwell Yoga Studio – a Christ-centered yoga studio in Frisco, TX. Everyone is welcome at our studio, regardless of religious affiliation, ability, etc. I started my own yoga journey about 10 years ago after much encouragement from my mom (she is a yoga teacher and also leads classes and Pilates Reformer sessions at Dwell). I came across a yoga workshop in Dallas hosted by Holy Yoga, attended, and fell in love with their style of teaching yoga. It was the first time I had experienced the combination of yoga, worship and Christian meditation on my mat.

Soon after attending the workshop, I decided to get certified through Holy Yoga and began teaching classes in Frisco. After a few years, I felt a prompting in my spirit to open up a Christ-centered yoga studio that offered classes for true beginners as well as advanced yogis in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Everything was going smooth until Covid hit. We were forced to close the studio as part of the city/state mandates for fitness centers/gyms in the spring of 2020. Once we were able to reopen, it was at a limited capacity with adequate spacing between patrons. During this time, we lost a significant portion of our membership.

We came back to full capacity in October of 2020, but we continued to experience fluctuations in attendance. It seems to have taken almost a full year for people to feel comfortable getting back out and interacting with people face to face, but it finally feels like we have turned a page.

Our customers tell us that they need to feel the calm and peace that they experience at our studio while on their mats or using the sauna. It is part of their self-care and stress relief protocol.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dwell Yoga Studio opened October 1, 2018, so we just celebrated our 3rd year in business. We made it through Covid and this summer our customers voted us as their favorite Yoga Studio in Frisco/Plano by Living Magazine.

We are unique in that all of our yoga classes are Christ-centered. This means that regardless of which class you attend – restorative, deep stretch, slow flow or hot yoga – the class will begin with a time of centering around a passage of Scripture, worship or instrumental music will be played, and class will end with biblical meditation or devotion.

Students are never in a position to share their beliefs or pray aloud, they simply receive.

I am most proud of our amazing team. They are all full of patience, encouragement and reflect the love of Christ to all who enter. We have even had students that have gone on to receive their yoga certifications and now teach or sub-classes at the studio.

In addition to offering yoga classes, we have added an Infrared Sauna for our clients to use to help in recovery, reduce inflammation, improved immunity, and overall health. Private Pilates Reformer sessions are also offered at the studio and have been very popular with our population that needs a gentle, joint-friendly way of building strength.

Our goal is to provide services to help our clients in their overall wellness journey – body, mind, and spirit.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t know if I would characterize myself a risk-taker; however, I recognize the risk I took in opening this studio. When I look back, I still wonder sometimes how I had the courage to keep moving forward with this dream of opening the studio. I think God planted this dream in my heart, and once I have Him my “yes”, He just gave me one step at a time to complete.

Before I knew it, I had completed a few business courses though Colin Small Business Development Center. That helped build my confidence and outlined the next steps I needed to take. I consulted with an attorney, registered my business, and began working on a loan. I reached out to a friend who was a realtor and she helped me navigate a commercial lease. That was the most stressful/riskiest part for me because I was signing my name to a legal commitment that I would make this business work! But through it all, I just prayed and trusted that God had a purpose for me and this business.
