Today we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie Croy, LPC-A, LCDC-I, NCC.
Hi McKenzie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a singer, dancer, and actress myself, being around the entertainment industry, I picked up on a few things. Substance abuse is one of the many ways to escape the constant pressure of performing. A lack of identity plagues most creatives, which leads to wearing a mask on and off the stage. Like any industry, people are off wondering who they are and what their purpose is. The entertainment industry adds another element with the creative, the arts. Creatives often walk a fine line between sharing something with the world out of love, dedication, and joy while facing critiques that can crush the spirit of creativity. Adding fame, applause, and stardom intensifies, well everything.
I had a dream one night, a real Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. moment, and saw myself heading to an award show with two people in the car, one who drank and the other turned to drugs. I realized that they were my friends, they were looking to me for help, my heart sank, and I woke up knowing what I was called to do. I now have my master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with an emphasis in substance abuse. I have a passion and a calling to help those in the entertainment industry, to find their identity, to use their gifts, and to be free from substances.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No… Like any true counselor, a counselor must be counseled. Being honest about my own struggles and shortcomings has not been easy. Being a creative myself, I understand the drive of perfectionism. Being excellent at your craft is not the same thing as beating yourself into submission. A safe place and empathy are crucial. Despite the challenges, once I face and heal the wounds, I then have authority in that area. You might already know this principle if you know how the Kingdom works.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We specialize in trauma and addiction mental health counseling among the creative arts population. A common therapeutic technique used is EMDR, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, which is used to heal trauma stuck in the central nervous system. We support the art community and dream with the dreamers.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For any entrepreneur, risk is important. Having a thought-out plan is a great idea, but how far does the plan take us until we take the leap? My style has never been to shy away from an adventure. I love jumping in and finding out how it will really work, once I’m in. Counting the cost is still a great idea, but I don’t let it paralyze me.
