Today we’d like to introduce you to Tymeka Coney.
Tymeka, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I grew up in Singing Hills (Oak Cliff) and then moved to Desoto where I graduated from DeSoto High School. At DeSoto High School, I was voted Class Favorite, a member of Student Council and I was very active with our Theatre Department where I did several plays in high school. Once I graduated, I attended Texas Tech University where I was also active in Theatre and performed in our college’s rendition of the Broadway Musical Hair and continued to study theatre, creative writing, and psychology. I also won Most Talented for an original monologue I performed and was crowned Miss Black & Gold my senior year. I was determined to finish college so that I could advance into the real world and live out my dreams… so much so that I ended up receiving my Bachelor of Arts Degree in three years from college. During that short period of time, I was very active in college as I was a member of the college Gospel choir, A DJ at two of our local radio stations, and I pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. and I also put on several poetry, music and other entertainment shows for Black History month and I organized our first fundraiser Talent Show & Step show on campus raising thousands of dollars for our sorority. After I graduated college, I wanted to explore more in the area of acting so I applied to KD Studio Actor’s Conservatory and ended up receiving a scholarship which prompted me to attend where I received an Associate of Applied Arts Degree covering, Script Analysis, Film production and all aspects of Acting in all genres. After graduating from KD Studio, I still wanted to pursue more in the area of Acting & Entertainment and quickly made the transition to Los Angeles. It was here where I began to explore all of my gifts and talents. Being in Los Angeles showed me I could be multi-hyphenate and I could multitask. It was here that I utilized all my gifts and my territory began to expand. Today, I am a Published Author, Spoken Word Poet with an Album on iTunes, Songwriter, Content Creator, TV & Film Writer, Award-winning Actress and Producer, Playwright, Director as well as a Public Relations consultant.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life and career have not been a smooth road but I still hold on to my faith that I have always known as a child. I thank God that I had two praying Grandmothers (Clara Coney & Jerlene Sims) that were very active in the church and are still to this day. These two ladies are prayer warriors and have always been supportive. They taught me the power of prayer and it was my grandmother Clara who introduced me to Ervay Cedar Baptist Church where I grew up. It was here that I remember doing the church plays and always being called on to read at programs and also where I first displayed my leadership skills as the youth choir director. I was also raised with a family that loved music, arts & entertainment. I remember my loving and supportive mother (Joann Coney) former 1st African American Cheerleader at Greiner Middle school, Homecoming Queen & Model at Barbizon and my father who was a DJ,Party planner and Videographer always playing music at the house, watching stand up comedy and movies, going to concerts and my brother Lemo Coney who is also a singer. We have always been exposed to talent shows & live events growing up and we have written songs and my brother is also my Producing Partner to this day. Although, I can recall having love and support and faith from the family unit, the struggles and challenges I’ve faced is finding mentorship. When I embarked on a path to pursue a career in entertainment… there was no one in my immediate family that was in the entertainment industry and when I reached out to others in the entertainment industry, I was always met with rejection in some way.
However, I did not let not having a mentor detour me from the love and passion I had for show business as I realized you can’t have one without the other. I started to evolve and do things independently and I became my own mentor as I learned how to do the things I desired by following my instincts and of course my faith. Having experienced the rejection of those in the industry that did not want to share their wisdom and insight with me has caused me to be different and more creative and resourceful. As a result, I now use my experience and knowledge and insight to share with others and also provide opportunities for others at the level that I am on in any way I can. When talent/those looking to pursue a career in this business reach out to me for advice, I share my wisdom. As I continue to write songs and create content and produce Tv, Film and Stage Productions, I always share opportunities for talent to audition and or become a Cast or Crew member with my productions in any way I can. I get fulfillment out of seeing others utilize their talent and knowing that I am apart of providing that platform for them to do so. I know that the platform I am afforded is bigger than me and that I am blessed to be a blessing.
Even through the material I write… it will always be not only to entertain but to empower and educate others lives mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am planning to continue to expand and grow my company and have exposure to share my talents as a Poet, Songwriter, Author, Voiceover, Speaker, Actress, Playwright, and Producer nationally. I am looking forward to partnering with Sponsors and touring several of my stage plays and continuing to provide opportunities for talented cast and crew to be a part of these productions. I am also continuing to write songs and create content for TV and write films. I will continue to produce independently but I also look forward to continuing to pitch content for TV and or to sell a TV show or feature film so that I can have more seed to invest in my production company and into the lives and careers of others and to continue to spread positive messages to the masses through media. I enjoy being coast to coast from Dallas to Hollywood and looking to continue to expand to broader horizons. After the musical stage play You, Me & He debuts in Dallas, Texas @ Rosewood Center, 5938 Skillman St., Dallas, Texas 75231 on Sept. 14, 2019. I will also be producing the 1st Annual Mind Film Festival that I co-founded to provide opportunities for other filmmakers internationally Nov. 8-10th in Los Angles, CA. www.mindfilmfestival.com
