Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Megan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As long as I can remember, I’ve always felt this pull to study nutrition. In college, I almost switched my major from journalism but couldn’t get past the science (it was never my strong suit). Plus, I wanted to work in magazines – Health magazine to be specific. Then, just a couple months after graduating I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. That’s when I started learning about this whole other side of nutrition I’d never heard of before: the power of using food as medicine and the capability for the human body to heal. I felt this mix of hope, relief, so many questions and a little bit of anger that this seemed so underground. It was too big a revelation to not want to share it. I got my health coaching certification in 2010 and learned from some of the doctors and healers whose words were some of the first that inspired me to begin this journey, including Dr. Andrew Weil, whose book Spontaneous Healing started me on this path. That was nearly a decade ago now. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing others have the same “ah-ha” moment when they realize they’re more in control of their health than they ever thought possible or felt capable of. Now, instead of writing for Health magazine I share health info and recipes on my own blog and through wellness programs to help people create healthier, happier lives.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha, well, there’s been a couple of shakeups. Two big ones… I had twins a few years ago (who are almost four now). That really threw me. Before they came along I could stop by the store whenever I needed to and leisurely make dinner. Or if I didn’t feel like cooking, order take out. Then, the twins came and I did what I think a lot of moms do – my own needs went out the window. I’ll take care of myself later, I thought. Soon though, there was my body, screaming at me. I had to find a balance that would allow me to take care of myself while keeping up with everything else too. I felt like the poster mama for that saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” I started finding ways to get back to my diet, habits, and self-care. I got more efficient with it all and created a system that worked for us. That’s what got me feeling like myself again, gave me more energy, and the added bonus that came from it – my whole family was eating better and was healthier too. It’s made me a better coach and inspired me to create more resources and simpler recipes that make it easier for others to do the same.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Megan Adams Brown, CHC story. Tell us more about the business.
My health coaching practice focuses on helping people take charge of their own health and the health of their children and families. I help people find balance and a system that works for them to reach their own health goals, regain their energy, feel like themselves again, etc., just like I did. It’s my goal to empower my clients with knowledge, guide them through habit and lifestyle changes and help them create routines that fit their lives, how they live them today. The system that helped me get back to cooking and eating the way I needed to feel my best, I’ve turned that into an online program – Dinner in 10 – that teaches you how to make dinner in 10 minutes every night of the week (for real. see for yourself with my free 3-day plan. It gives you everything to take the thought and stress out of all your meals so you can make it routine. A week in people finds they’re more comfortable and confident in the kitchen, and by the end know the basics to cook on the fly, without having to rely on a recipe (which I believe is the real secret to eating well consistently). Clients tell me this system is “life-changing.” They’re surprised when their energy is up just a few days in, when husbands and kids end up loving the meals, and when their grocery bill is less than it was before, too. What I love most is that it’s teaching people how to fish… like the saying “give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” There are more resources than ever now to help make it easy to eat healthily. Most of them, like the meal kit services and ready-made dinners, though get expensive and it’s easy to become dependent on the service. This is different. It’s giving people the skills and confidence to easily and affordable to feed themselves and their families the best food possible for life. And that’s something I’m really proud of.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Not so much luck per se… I wouldn’t say getting sick a decade ago was lucky, though in a strange way I’m grateful that it happened. Because if it hadn’t I’d likely be doing something completely different and probably still ignoring that pull to nutrition because the science was “too hard.” Of course, no one wants or wishes struggles in life for anyone, but I think my biggest lesson learned through all of this is what can happen when you surrender to it, let change happen, and recognize the lessons and direction that can come out of life’s obstacles. In my experience, I’ve found they were put there for a reason… they’re what have and continue to guide me to the work that I know I’m supposed to be doing.
