Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Francisco.
Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from The Colony, TX and was born in Carrollton, TX. I have always been interested in learning about the human body and focused on the health and healing benefits of exercise. I was very active in high school as I was a hooper and played basketball, which allowed me to see a lot of injuries. In the midst of being an active young individual, I grew up in a household with two amazing parents who placed “working together” as the pure foundation of their success as a couple in providing and raising children as a team. So with those two experiences in the life of being active and knowing that one of my goals is to meet a partner that I am able to build a life together with birthed the brand of “Get It Together” and “Muscle Millennial” the two businesses I own along with my life partner and fiance, Gregory Harris, Jr. I recently received my doctorate in physical therapy, which has been a blessing. I have been chasing this dream for my entire life. I’ve known that I wanted to be a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) and positivity influencer since I was a young girl in high school.
My journey was not easy, it had its ups and downs, but every step to make it this far makes so much sense. I left Dallas to go to college at Langston University in Oklahoma. I am a proud HBCU grad because my university set me on the path of becoming the proud black woman who knows her worth that I am today. Then, I ventured off to an island 45 minutes past Houston. TX called Galveston, where I just completed my doctorate at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). Galveston, TX is a special place because I met the love of my life, best friend and life partner and fiance! I am where I am today because of the positive love and support that I have received from my family and fiance, Greg. Greg has been the reason why we are able to build our public platforms and businesses together.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I started physical therapy school in 2016, initially, but was forced to take a leave of absence due to an unfortunate car accident that left me with a concussion and constant headaches. At the same time, I was being harassed by an ex-boyfriend from college that made me feel unsafe in my home, causing me to leave campus to stay home with my family in Dallas. It was a tough time in life. I became depressed and felt like a true failure. I felt like the black girl who left her HBCU and tried to get a doctorate at a PWI (predominately white institution) that was not able to handle the degree of coursework at a higher level of education. I was embarrassed and did not want to return the next year. However, I was vulnerable enough to tell my parents that I need professional help from a licensed therapist to help me sort through my depression and feelings of failure.
I am proud to say that God gave me the ability and resources to go to therapy in January of 2017 is what truly saved my life and put me back on the path to success. I was able to return to UTMB in the fall of 2017 and made the dean’s list proving to myself that I am not an imposter, and though I was a black woman in an all white space, I had the ability to be successful! As time went on, I struggled throughout the entire program. Physical Therapy school is very hard, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! However, the summer of 2018, being in DPT school got better because I was able to swipe right into my blessing on Tinder and meet my fiance! My fiance, Greg, has helped to develop our podcast and fitness & physical therapy business, which has been growing exponentially over the past year! Since then, the road definitely still has had its speed bumps. However it is a blessing to slow down and pass over the speed bump with my life partner by my side.
Please tell us about Get It Twogether and Muscle Millennial.
We have two businesses focused on promoting millennial singles and couples to work together. Our podcast is called “Get It Together,” and our fitness and physical therapy brand is “Muscle Millennial.”
Get It Together is a coming of age podcast where my fiance and I discuss love, sex, and the trials and triumphs of life as we navigate the world together. We’re young, goofy as hell and have a lot of stories to tell. We’re passionate about spreading positivity, encouraging everybody under the sound of our voice, living our best life, tackling our fitness goals, and always keeping it 100% transparent and real. Our mission as a couple is to encourage and inspire other millennials to find someone they are able to build a life TOGETHER with. Greg and I have naturally been able to grow together and align our life goals with one another in a world where the majority of our peers are more interested in the “me, myself and I” lifestyle.
Get It Twogether podcast specializes in providing a new perspective on what it means to be a millennial couple working together and showcasing how much better life can be while sharing our life experiences of success, failures and everything in between. This podcast holds nothing back! Greg and I are most known for posting our funny TikTok videos (@gregomymego on TikTok), but our podcast lets you in on the raw and transparent conversations about relationships, family, health and wellness, finanical freedom, and more! Get It Together has new episodes every Tuesday! It can be found on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts! WE’re prepared to give you an ounce of laughter, a pound of love and a ton of reality!
Along with getting our lives together on the podcast, we also have Muscle Millennial, our fitness and physical therapy brand. Greg and I have always been passionate about physical fitness and promoting a healthier lifestyle, specifically within the black community. Throughout physical therapy school, I sat through lectures highlighting that comorbidities such as Diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of death amongst our black community. As a new grad physical therapist, I have the opportunity to advocate and promote my community to be more physically active by taking steps to make better choices in their physical and nutritional health. I am currently completing a residency in Orthopedic physical therapy that will further my knowledge of how to prevent injuries in weekend warriors (active adult population), rehabilitate athletes with knee, hip or any musculoskeletal injury and treat the vast majority of people in America dealing with low back pain. There is a method to understanding how to use therapeutic exercise as medicine to the body for living a life without pain.
Muscle Millennial fitness and physical therapy is the full course meal to empowering couples to be great, be active and to be happy and healthy together. My fiance creates strength and conditioning programs that have helped him and I tackle our personal fitness goals, and I bring in the evidenced-based practice of understanding that movement is medicine to the body and helping people get back to weight-lifting, running, or exercising without pain! We can be found on Instagram @musclemillennial where we post multiple videos of partner exercises, educational muscle activation exercises and are availble to answer any questions pertaining to living an active and healthy lifestyle.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is waking up on Saturday mornings to get ready for my little league basketball games. I had two siblings and we all played sports growing up, so my mom would probably be taking my little brother to his basketball game while my dad has my older sister and I heading to our games at a different gym. Then, at the end of the day, we would all gather as a family to have a debrief about how each person played in their game that day. My dad would give some harsh criticism to what each could ave did better, but it was all in spirits to make us a better player, but most importantly, better human beings! Playing sports and learning the importance of discipline and teamwork are two of the reasons why I am able to work so well with others today!
