Meet Megan Lyons of The Lyons’ Share Wellness in Uptown Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Lyons.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After years of climbing the corporate ladder while not-so-secretly dreaming about a career where I could help others every single day and indulge my passion for all things health-related, I made the jump and opened The Lyons’ Share Wellness on January 6th, 2014. Since that day, I haven’t looked back for a moment, and can truly say that I’ve been grateful to be in this role every single day. It has taken a lot of hard work, many failures (one of the best lessons I’ve learned from entrepreneurship is how to fail quickly!), and hasn’t always been exactly the way I planned, but growing a business where I coach over 100 one-on-one clients per year, speak to thousands more, and impact an even larger segment than that via online programs, social media, and writing … it is my absolute dream come true!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started the business, I naively thought that I would send an email to my personal contacts letting them know that the shingle was on the door, and all of a sudden, my calendar would be full of clients. Guess what? After that first set of emails, I received ZERO clients! Similarly, I offered free workshops to over 50 gyms, community centers, and businesses in the area during those first few months, and only one accepted! Now, I charge thousands of dollars for those workshops, but without the right marketing approach and experience under my belt, I couldn’t even “sell” them for free!

I have made poor marketing decisions, launched programs that had far fewer participants than anticipated, lost focus on my own health by working too hard, and agonized over “problems” that were really insignificant, but every single one of those struggles has made me a better business owner today. Each time I check my waitlist of one-on-one clients, fill a program to capacity, book another speaking engagement, or have a generally awesome entrepreneurial day, I feel grateful for the winding road and what it has taught me!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Lyons’ Share Wellness – what should we know?
The Lyons’ Share Wellness offers one-on-one nutrition counseling and health coaching, as well as corporate and community workshops on health, wellness, and nutrition.

My one-on-one clients would say that several things set me apart: my unrelenting belief in them and their potential for success, my ability to hold them accountable to their goals without judging them for their shortcomings, my constant stream of new ideas and desire to make nutrition sustainable, and my belief in customizing each and every recommendation to the specific client. I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution to nutrition, and I don’t ascribe to ANY fad diets or unnecessary restriction. I am all about making your health goals sustainable, impactful, and yes, even fun!

From a speaking perspective, my ability to make nutrition information approachable and entertaining sets me apart. Everyone knows that vegetables are healthy, but I share suggestions of how to fit them into a busy lifestyle, offer tips and tricks to make it easier, and incentivize audience members to make commitments that they know will benefit them.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A burning desire to see others feel their happiest and healthiest. I get so much personal satisfaction out of seeing my clients succeed, that I am willing to work as hard as I need to make this happen. The long hours and sleepless nights are worth it when I see clients come off of their prescription medications, gain confidence in their bodies, master meal planning for their families, and feel in control of their health.
