Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Porter.
Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Imagine being a senior in high school, homeless and living in your car, Not being able to participate in any of your class of “2011” festivities. Feet are swollen because of the constant gravity positioning of them because you are sleeping sitting up in the back seat of the car. Wearing the same clothes everyday to school. Sneaking in the hotel bathrooms in the morning just to take quick wash ups and to steal some breakfast before you are headed off to school.
All the while, keeping a smile on your face and telling everyone, “I am doing good!” Not feeling pretty walking down the halls, always self-conscious wondering if people “smelled” you, or even noticed if you was wearing the same clothes as the day before! That person was me, and all of this happened to me my senior year of high school. It all began when I moved to Florida in 2010. Never in my dreams did I think that God would bring me down such a humiliating path in my life. To fast forward, after my graduation night and I received my graduation gift, which by the way was a 0.79 cent polar pop from your local gas station, I made up in my mind that this was not how I was going to continue to live my life.
Weeks later I enrolled myself into a quick LPN (Licensed Practical Nursing) program, that I started a month later, Even though I had no solid place to live, I was so eager knowing that the current season I was in, wasn’t going to last always. As the months went by, and I no longer had a vehicle, I then had to take taxi cabs to and from school – not having any money to pay them. I shamefully, yet filled with faith still contacted them for a ride. Thankfully, most of them felt sorry and gave me a ride and told me to one day “pay them back”. Having to finish my homework and studies before sunset because I had no other light source to use to see my books, by the grace of God He allowed me to finish and Graduate in 2012 as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I then proceeded to obtain my Registered Nurse (RN) in 2014. I then went back to school to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in 2015, and now I am currently enrolled at Texas Women’s University for my Master’s Degree, where in December of 2019, I’ll be walking the stage as a Family Nurse Practitioner!
Has it been a smooth road?
My road was definitely not smooth! But knowing how good my God is and knowing what Romans 8:28 says, that ALL things will work together for MY good, gave me peace at night that it was all apart of God’s process and my pruning/molding. James 1 verse 2-4 states, “When troubles come in any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow!…” So many nights I went to bed not having food to eat, not able to shower, not able to have a bed to sleep in. But it was all worth it, and if I had to go through this humbling experience again. I would. I remember one night, I was walking home feeling like God had totally just left my life, felt like I had no purpose, no plan, no reason to keep striving trying to finish school.
A man rolled up on me in a nice lavish car, asked me why I was outside at 11:30 at night. I didn’t respond. He reached out, offered me his business card, said I was beautiful then and drove off. When I got a chance to read the card, he was an owner of a strip club. My mind started to race and think, “If I just do this for a few nights, my life will drastically change.” I was tired, I was fed up. I wanted a change. So I let a few days go by thinking about taking him by the offer, and as I got ready to call him, I heard God say loud in my ears, “NO!” I ripped up the card, threw it away and immediately started to cry. Have you ever been in a place so challenging where you couldn’t see God or you couldn’t trace him? This frustrated me even more than the obstacles because I felt like I couldn’t see Him or trace Him, yet I still had to trust Him. I had to listen to His “No”, even though He was allowing me to go through this storm. But even though I couldn’t see God, I still trusted him throughout the MANY roadblocks.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am now an RN/charge nurse on a medical surgical floor. I have medical experience in the ER, Rehabilitation, psychiatric wards, telemetry, internal medicine, pre-operative care, post-operative care, home health, and skilled nursing facilities. Nursing is a passion, I absolute LOVE to help people. I am so proud of the person I am today. Even through that chaotic storm of my life, God turned beauty from my ashes! Because of what I went through, I am more compassionate towards the people I care for, I am more humble and so grateful to God for allowing me to heal people with my hands. Through my nursing career and my passion to help people, I utilize social media to engage with people and spread education on health, health tips, healthy lifestyles, preventive care, disease processes, and treatments. I’m so grateful that I can reach people all over the world and provide 100% accurate and evidence-based education.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Once I finish with my Master’s degree in December 2019, as a Family Nurse Practitioner, my plan is to open up my own clinic within two years to help people. I not only want to help them when in need, I want to have educational health classes to help educate the community to prevent certain illnesses/diseases before it’s too late or even diagnosed. Many people have health issues due to lack of knowledge, so my goal is to help people understand and to teach preventive care. The purpose of my social media outlet page is to educate people on the importance of their health and how to stay healthy. Over the next 5-10 years, my goal is to expand clinics across the world to help spread healthcare and education.
