Meet Meghna Thakore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghna Thakore.

Hi Meghna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like a lotus flower, I rose from the mud. During the beginning of our global pandemic in 2020, I was laid off from my full-time job which provided me with safety, benefits, and guaranteed income. The job was a safety net for me until I finished my nursing degree. Suddenly, my life, like many others was being shaken up. Many companies were laying people off by the thousands. However, I was blessed with the opportunity to spend more time with family, reflect on my life, create new goals, and do a ton of online education for myself. Time to myself gave me new creative ideas on what I could do to earn money while I was not working. Thankfully, as I was already an Esthetician, but I was not working in my industry at the time due to unhealthy toxic work environments and not being paid my worth. I joined many support groups, became friends with other estheticians, and found some mentors in the skincare industry. With all the new ideas flowing, I told myself that I could be wildly successful like some of these awesome people in the Esthetician world. At that time, I told myself I wasn’t going to go back to school for nursing, but instead, I wanted to find happiness and success in the skincare world. I knew that if I was going to quit college, there was no room for failure. I immediately got to work. I did a lot of online courses, stayed up late nights creating a business plan, listened to hundreds of podcasts, created close relationships with people I looked up to, and started to slowly apply all of my new learnings into my work. I knew that in order to have success in this industry, I was going to have to dig deep and learn how to create a successful business. I was okay with doing the work, especially because there was no “Plan B” in place.

Soon enough, I was able to save up, invest in a small salon suite and buy my start-up products and supplies. I decided to make body waxing my main service because I loved it so much during esthetician school and I enjoyed the benefits of seeing results right away. Waxing is also a fun, quick, service where guests can leave feeling amazing. I enjoyed being able to play music, laugh, and talk with my clients through their services which helped me build super close relationships with them. I also have been personally getting waxed for many years and knew there was a MAJOR gap in the beauty industry where plus-size women and people of color did not get the quality services they deserved. I knew that I could bring a major change to the way body waxing is viewed by society and educate and encourage more people to make the switch! I am grateful for my background in the medical field, which allowed me to bring aspects of “bedside” manner and exceptional care to the beauty industry. I learned that people just truly want to know that they are taken care of, and if we all just have good intentions – we can change the world. All my previous experiences in my jobs have molded me into who I am today, and it helped me greatly in business, relationships, and my career. Today, I have an amazing team of three women, who I get the pleasure of mentoring, training, and supporting! I am happy to provide a safe place where other estheticians can come to work and fall in love with esthetics every day! Skin Things now is a waxing salon with multiple rooms, offering more services, and growing every day. We have big dreams for Skin Things! We are excited to expand our team and our menu of services!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing Skin Things has been an extremely bumpy ride. I have gone through major hoops and a lot of really difficult situations. In the beginning, I had to learn to be self-employed – which included perfecting time management, having discipline, creating strong boundaries with others and myself, facing difficult people…etc. Aside from learning the physical aspects of my job, I had to learn things that I have never had to do before, like administrative duties such as managing emails, inventory, website building, creating content, bookkeeping and so much more. My struggles have taught me that I am extremely resilient and capable of doing hard things.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Skin Things is a body-positive waxing salon that specializes in Brows and Brazilians! We pride ourselves in having an extremely diverse clientele, where everyone has a safe place to come get an amazing service and leave feeling better than when they walked in. Our new salon location is ALL THINGS PINK. We absolutely love the cozy, intimate feeling it has when someone walks in. We want people to know they are being taken care of and they are valued. We are education-based, so clients benefit by learning how to thoroughly take care of their skin when coming to see us. We teach them how to tackle unwanted issues like hyperpigmentation and ingrown hairs. We take the time to create a plan for each person. We created a unique program called “Brow Rehab!” With brow rehab, we do full consultations and learn about our client and their goals with their brows. We can help them achieve naturally fuller brows by teaching them maintenance, aftercare, and providing them with products to help them achieve better brows. We are totally different from any other waxing salon! We are a place where people cannot wait to come every single month because we are obsessed with creating healthy relationships with our guests and giving them exceptional services.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that Dallas is extremely diverse. We have such a healthy mix of cultural differences as well as so many different types of personalities. Dallas has seen tremendous growth and our city is just getting better and better! I love that we as a community come together and support each other when things get hard. I learned that Dallas people REALLY love supporting small, local businesses and are passionate about it. Locals all around Frisco, and the community, in general, is what helped Skin Things blossom during such a difficult time, without their support, we would not be where we are today. We are so happy to be serving such great people.
