Hi Melanie and Melinda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Melanie Akon and Melinda Waters and I are the founders of Mélange Aesthetics & Company. We are both trauma and acute care surgery nurse practitioners at a level one trauma center. The hospital we serve is a county hospital that treats every patient regardless of their socioeconomic or insurance status. Considering our hospital demographics, the population of patients that we serve do not obtain primary care routinely, thus making treatment plans complex and confounding.
In the intensive care unit, we routinely treat traumatic brain injuries from gunshots, motor vehicle crashes, and ground-level falls, as well as traumatic amputations and broken bones. We often conduct family meetings to discuss the injuries and prognosis for patients. After many years of revealing “bad news,” whether it is death, loss of limb, or being in a vegetative state, it becomes emotionally draining and numbing. Seeking families for “Doe” patients just so we can tell them that their loved one has passed and/or hearing a mother’s cry is taxing and painful. The agony and grief we see in the families’ eyes are often remembered for a long time. This disdain, heartbreak, and sadness have served as a major inspiration in the creation of Mélange Aesthetics & Co., PLLC. The purpose is to create a positive environment that serves as a conduit for mental clarity and mental peace. This space will be used for clients to escape reality and focus on enhancements that alleviates the life stressors that can be worn on the face and/or places a burden on the soul.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Essentially, all new endeavors are met with some type of resistance. These challenges intertwine and constitute a cycle that could potentially be discouraging and damaging for the novice company. Being proactive versus reactive will help alleviate some of these unforeseen circumstances.
Start-up costs serves as a major challenge when trying to ensure legalities such as contracts, protocols, malpractice insurance, as well as obtaining supervising physicians are properly handled. Another financial burden includes purchasing inventory from notable and legitimate manufacturers. These products are usually costly, especially when there is not a steady clientele. Lastly, having the means to purchase a safe and suitable location for business operations serve as a major dilemma with the development of new businesses.
Client recruitment and retention serves as another challenge that Mélange Aesthetics & Co. faced in the beginning phases. Although this is the fear for many medical spas, we have created several marketing strategies to the community with the intentions to promote a reputable and reliable company.

Mélange Aesthetics & Co., LLC. is a small company co-owned by two black women that are both certified Nurse Practitioners. One major impact of the focus of this company is being well-versed in a variety of illnesses. Illnesses such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, migraines, hyperhidrosis, facial scarring, muscle and joint injury, and vitamin deficiencies can restrict activities of daily living. Being board-certified and having the competency and ability to treat these illnesses from a two-dimensional approach affords a sense of gratification.
