Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Hernandez.
Melissa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Simply Bliss in the summer of 2015 out of a desire to set a Godly example for future generations. In today’s culture there are a lot of young ladies who are trying to get noticed in the wrong way, by wearing revealing clothing. My desire is to change that. I want my daughters to see that they can be cute, trendy, and modest at the same time.
The mission of the company is based on Proverbs 31:25. “She is clothed in strength and dignity…” I want every woman to feel this way; empowered by the Holy Spirit to live this out in their lives. This boutique is more than just clothes to me. It’s about sharing the message that women are beautiful, women are worthy and women are so loved by God. That modesty is desirable, and it’s God’s plan for women.
When I began the company I was working full time as a teacher and just thought I would be doing this as a “hobby” on the side. God had other plans! After growing the business online for 2 years, I resigned from my teaching position in the summer of 2017 to run the company full time. Then in January of this year I opened a retail location in Colleyville. It’s been a wonderful whirlwind!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth! When I started the company, I had no business background and no idea how to start an online business. I had to do a LOT of research and learning. And of course then there were the time constraints…I was working full time, I had three kids at home and was managing the company. It was tough!! I brought people alongside me to learn from and to fill in my weaknesses. I remember literally thinking, well if I have cute clothes then people will just find me and buy them, right? Boy was I WRONG! There is a reason marketing is such an important part of business!!! With the help of my marketing director, the “hobby” grew from a few sales that first month to a full-time business!
Then, in the fall of 2017 I went through truly the worst season of my life. My marriage of 10 years ended, and it became more important than ever for my business to be successful. But in His perfect way, God had prepared me for this and I was able to stay committed and focused on spreading my mission and even opened a retail location in January! I am so thankful for my relationships that I have made through this business that have helped sustain me through the darkest days.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Simply Bliss Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
Simply Bliss Boutique is a women’s clothing boutique, committed to providing modest, trendy clothing for today’s women. I personally curate styles from hundreds of vendors to find pieces that reflect the mission and value of the company, which is founded on Proverbs 31:25 – “She is clothed in strength and dignity”. We provide clothing and accessories, including one of a kind faith-based tee shirts that that help reflect our values as a company. As a company, I am most proud of being able to provide a service to women that I believe is very lacking in our society today. Women can shop online or in store and know they are going to find modest styles for their everyday wear. I see my business as my ministry – I get to sell clothes and tell people about Jesus! It’s literally my dream job!!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think the fashion industry is ever-changing, so it’s hard to say what things will look like in 5-10 years…but it definitely won’t look the same as it does now!! When we look at the shift from 10 years ago to now, there are definitely some consistencies. Classics will always be classics. Since Simply Bliss focuses on trends in fashion, we are committed to staying ahead of the curve and providing quality, affordable, modest trends along every step of the way!
