Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Melissa Santilli.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Santilli. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While in dental school, I became pregnant with my first child. I started paying attention to the dental materials such as amalgam fillings, which are 50% mercury content, and how they may affect pregnant women and unborn children. The more I looked into the materials, the more I realized there were many hazardous products that are not compatible with a pregnant woman and may have negative impacts on healthy individuals regardless of pregnancy.
After graduation, I found IAOMT, which is an organization of dentists who are proactively aware of the health effects of dental products and materials, thus came up with safety protocols to protect the patient, dentist and team members from the potential exposure to unnecessary harmful debris such as amalgam particulates with mercury. I am passionate about safety and quality in dentistry, and the impact a new confident smile can have on a person’s quality of life. I have taken hundreds of hours of CE since graduating each year to advance my education and expand my knowledge and skills to provide the best care possible for my patient’s oral health.
Has it been a smooth road?
I opened Honey Dental PLLC in January of 2015, but a few weeks later, a construction defect resulted in a flood by February of 2015. So we had to start from scratch again and opened in June of 2015. Then learning quickly the issue with collections.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Honey Dental – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our passion in dentistry involves seeing the bigger picture. I look at patient’s mouths as a window to their health. We consider their occlusal alignment, history of damage, soft tissue health, neck and TMJ issues, tooth and gum health, additional medical concerns the patient may have, as well as old defective restorations. We consider diet, oral habits and sleep in their treatment plan to maximize their quality of life.
I also have a strict safety protocol for old amalgam filling removal to address fractures and secondary decay under old fillings by protecting the patient from breathing, swallowing, or even getting any mercury particles in their clothing.
Many adults have to juggle a busy schedule filled with work deadlines, other responsibilities as well as adapting to new big changes such as a new marriage, a new baby, moving to a new home, changing jobs, divorce, major family changes. These stressful situations can cause clenching or grinding of teeth in stressful situations.
Many patients start to notice difficulty chewing and experience jaw discomfort as well as reminisce about how their smiles used to be when they were younger. It is common that patients start to notice gradual changes in their smile and how that has influenced their confidence to smile around others. After discussing their concerns, we were able to discover solutions that helped to restore their youthful smile and confidence. Thankfully there are now ways to repair that damage and protect your teeth from any future problems caused by grinding as well as restoring a beautiful smile. We are excited and passionate about sharing these solutions with patients!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the vibrant growth and opportunities in this city. I love meeting new people and being involved in the community. I dislike growing pains of road construction and frequency of traffic accidents.
