Meet Melissa Velazquez of Saló by M&R in Design District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Velazquez.

Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey in the beauty industry really began about six years ago. Growing up I loved making people smile and feel confident about themselves.

Soon after graduating high school, I began working a regular 9-5 job, like most of us do. At the time I felt like it was my only choice since I had a son that I had to support and bills to pay. An opportunity came up for me to start cosmetology school, which did require full time during the day. I would work part-time in the evenings at a call center, so this meant I had very long days and little time with my son. My parents were a big support, they would help me take my son to school and played a big part in helping me raise him.

After completing cosmetology school, a well know hairstylist, Erica Zamora reached out to me, which at the time she was opening Aromaz Artistry. This was an opportunity that I would forever be grateful for. I started as an assistant and worked part-time at Drybar while building up my clientele. I worked there for about five years along with some great hairstylists and made everlasting friendships.

I became really good friends with one person, in particular, Roxana Hurtado. We would spend a lot of quality time outside of work and one day decided to go into business together. This was when the idea of Saló by M&R was created. With a lot of brainstorming, long nights, hard work and the support of our husbands, we were able to make it a reality. We found the perfect spot to open our new hair salon in the Design District. We are now approaching our one year anniversary and are very thankful for the hairstylists and clients that make this possible. Stayed tuned because our journey has really just begun.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. Learning to run a business hasn’t been easy, there’s so much to learn and things to do. Like they say, “Nothing worth having comes easy.” I’m proud to say that I’ve been able to withstand the obstacles and struggles along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At Saló by M&R we offer all color services and specialize in Balayage/Foilayage. We love making our clients happy and making them feel welcomed at all times. Good vibes!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As of right now to keep learning and master the industry. Also, to continue to grow Saló by M&R and offer our clients the best service. Who knows? My mind is always thinking of new ideas, possibly a new business coming soon.
