Today we’d like to introduce you to Melonee Scruggs and Destiny Johnson.
Melonee and Destiny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We were randomly chosen as strangers to be college roommates at The University of North Texas in 2012 and ended up becoming best friends. During our time at UNT, game nights were a staple. Potlucks and regular hangouts eventually turned into game nights that were talked about for months to come. Whether it was a Halloween themed, impromptu, or a “Let’s just get together and kick it” game night, it was always a party.
The thought of starting a game night hosting business began during our recent cruise trip to Cozumel, Mexico in June 2018. Destiny is known to bring her duffel bag full of games everywhere she goes, so this trip wasn’t any different.
During our trip, there were a couple of nights where we invited some of our new cruise friends to join us for some games. Because of the turnout, we joked that we should start a business hosting games. Once we returned back from the trip, we decided to turn our joke into a reality. After all, having game nights are what we love to do.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our challenges so far are getting our name out to the public and balancing both our full-time jobs. Destiny is a 1st Grade Teacher in Denton ISD, and Melonee is a Marketing Project Manager for a local community college. Since our brand is a unique idea, we want to expose ourselves as much as possible to expand our reach.
So far we are taking the steps to accomplish this goal by stepping out of our comfort zones and attending different networking events, speaking to random people we meet during passing about our business and posting on social media.
Game Plan Dallas – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are game-night hosts that customize games for events, such as Adult Game Nights, Birthdays, Wedding Parties, Work Team Building, etc. We’re a mobile business that brings the entertainment to wherever your event is located, and if you don’t have an event location, we could provide one.
We specialize in providing a mix of custom-styled games that will have you believing that you are starring in a TV game show. Whether we’re playing a traditional game that others might’ve played such as Charades, or a game found on television like Family Feud, we plan to take it up a notch! We know that everyone has attended or hosted a game night, but our job is to introduce you to the new way to party in Dallas.
All of our outrageous and hilarious party games target you and your friend’s interest and is customized to your specific party. We create new games for each party so that no one party is exactly alike. There are also additional services that we offer to parties such as, prize packs, party favor bags, custom Snap Chat filters, and photo stations.
We are most proud of how far we’ve come in such a short time frame. After each goal, whether it was as small as having an official domain name for our website or as big as booking a high school booster club’s 150+ guest party, we always catch ourselves smiling at each other, congratulating ourselves every step of the way. We’re really enjoying our growth.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We consider success as being able to showcase our business and new games to new groups of people every chance that we can get. If we leave each party with compliments such as, “I’ve never played this before,” or we can tell that our guests are truly enjoying themselves, we know that we’ve succeeded.
Our success checkpoints also include having a great attendance ratio at our monthly/bi-monthly events that we host. You could find out about our next public game night by checking out www.GamePlanDFW.com/events.
