Meet laura Rojas of Mendi Luxe Salon (Laura Rojas Beauty) in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to laura Rojas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started cosmetology in high school. I would work on friends and my family’s hair! I’ve always had such a passion for the beauty industry and loved transforming people’s looks. I didn’t complete my hours in high school because I got pregnant and would have to miss school for Drs appts., etc. After graduating high school, I chose to put cosmetology off and go to college for something different. I did 2 yrs. at a community college and I wasn’t sure what path I should take. I kept changing my major. 3 years later, I decided hair is what I love, so I decided to visit schools in Dallas to see which best fit my schedule because I had a family already.

When I chose to go back to cosmetology in 2011, I was 23 yrs. old I had 3 children and one on the way. I chose Aveda Institute in Dallas and loved it! Driving back and forth pregnant from Corsicana (my hometown) to Dallas 3 days a week. was exhausting but I did it. I graduated and immediately started working at a salon In Corsicana. I worked there for almost 5 years of renting a booth. I felt like in a small town my career had reached its limit and I wasn’t happy. I knew it was time for a change. I then found out I was pregnant with my 6th child! I was upset because I had all these plans for myself and I knew being pregnant would make it harder, but I knew I couldn’t use my pregnancy as an excuse to give up. So, I chose to take a risk and move. I knew moving to a bigger city would be the best for my career and benefit my family in the long run. I found a job at Blushbar (a dry bar in Frisco). It was different at blushbar because I came from working at a salon where I did cuts and colors to a salon where we only do blowouts and makeup.

My skills in makeup and hairstyling grew tremendously working at blushbar! They gave me the push I never had before to become better in what I do. I had no clientele when I moved here so I knew I had to start from the bottom. The owners of blushbar, Sarah and Nadia helped me gain a clientele by letting me promote my own business at their salon. Which I am completely grateful for. I started by traveling to clients houses and doing their cuts and colors there. After only 5 months of living in a brand new city not knowing anyone I was able to build up a clientele And was able to open up my own salon suite and my clientele continues to grow every day by social media and referrals.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a young mother was definitely a challenge but it helped me push harder. Nothing was ever handed to me everything I have or have ever wanted Iv had to work twice as hard for. Throughout this journey, I had many setbacks I went through a divorce and I’ve never really had help with my children other than their fathers. So, when it came to making my schedule it was always a struggle because I had to determine my schedule According to their work schedule. Right now, my husband works nights and we never see each other but that’s the only way to make it work with the kids. We are a team and know that it may be a challenge right now, but it’ll all be worth it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mendi luxe salon (laura Rojas beauty) story. Tell us more about the business.
I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 6 yrs. now. I specialize in cuts colors makeup and updos. I’ve also recently started offering tape in extensions and am looking into starting my own extension line! I’ve had so many obstacles thrown at me throughout my ENTIRE life so I’m very proud of myself. I’m proud because there were many times, I felt like giving up, I never thought I could make it, being a mother of 6 kids but they motivated me even more. I think what sets me apart is that I I like to build relationships with my clients. I want to know you about your family your likes and dislikes. I don’t want them to feel like they are just a person in my chair I want them to feel like apart of the family! Who doesn’t like to feel warm and welcome? Lol at the end of our appt. I want my clients to leave 100% happy with their look but also happy with their experience with me.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I honestly don’t believe in good or bad luck. Although you may hear me from time to time say “I have the worst luck” lol Everything Iv gone through, good or bad, I truly believe it was meant to happen for a reason or at least I tell myself that to make me feel better. I’ve changed my way of thinking with good and bad luck because anytime something “bad” has happened I noticed if I didn’t let it go and accept it (if I couldn’t change it) then more bad things followed. I don’t like feeling sorry for myself, so if I can’t change it then, I accept it and move on. I try not to dwell on the things I have no control over.
