Meet Michael Carr, D.C. of Roots Chiropractic Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Carr, D.C..

Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Chiropractic has been a part of my life since I was in high school. I was involved in several auto accidents back to back and the result was a complete loss of health. Along with musculoskeletal pain, I was having daily headaches which eventually turned into debilitating migraines. Over the course of three months following my medical doctors directions and taking their prescribed medications, I lost over 35 lbs and became sickly. My mother decided to try something different which is how I ended up seeing Dr. Lewis D.C. at Midland Chiropractic Clinic. That doctor changed my life. He didn’t just adjust me. He took the time to educate me on how my nervous system functioned and was able to relate my symptoms to the different areas of my spine that were under excessive stress. It only took 6 weeks to become pain free, however it took a little over a year to return my spine to its natural state- meaning I put in the work to rebuild the curves of my spine and balance out my pelvis. While receiving chiropractic care, I was also going to night school to become an EMT-B. I was spending my weekends working in the ER and on ambulances. I was getting to see both sides of the healthcare spectrum, Allopathic care vs Holistic care. I became enamored with the bodies ability to heal and how a well adjusted spine could not only protect against injury, but also create longevity. I was hooked. I had direction, and there is nothing more valuable to a young man than a focused path. I knew that helping people through chiropractic was what I was intended to do.
Through college, I was like most college students, BROKE!! I found a chiropractor in my college town that agreed to treat me weekly and in turn, I swept and mopped his floors. I also shadowed him to learn about the profession. When I graduated with my BS in Biology from UNT, I continued my education at Parker University in Dallas. At Parker University, I gained two more BS and my Doctorate of Chiropractic (DC). I graduated in Dec 2011 and have been practicing in the metroplex ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every journey has it bumps and I have learned from all of them, many self-inflicted. Instead of focusing on what was going wrong, I looked for the “green lights” as Matthew McConaughey says. Most of my struggles were a direct result of thinking I knew best instead of allowing God to direct me. When opening and building a business, the struggle most often came in the form of finances. I was fortunate to have friends in the same profession building the same kind of practices. We had nightly calls to discuss struggles, but always focused on the action steps need to move past them. Nightly calls became weekly, and weekly calls became biweekly. Eventually we started to discuss everything that was going right instead of what we saw as going wrong. Having accountability is essential. I had to stand up in a room filled with my peers on a quarterly basis and discuss how my clinic was performing and how many lives I was changing. We kept our focus on what impact we were making in our communities and what we could do to improve that impact.

As you know, we’re big fans of Roots Chiropractic Dallas. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Roots Chiropractic Dallas, we focus on chiropractic corrective care. The same type of care that changed my life as a teen. Instead of using chiropractic as a bandaid or spot fix, we educate our practice member on the importance of maintaining proper spinal alignment and treating the body as a whole, instead of separate pieces that work independently. We educate and provide an environment where our clients feel free to ask the hard questions. We provide a safe, fun and energetic environment that makes working toward your health goals pleasant and exciting. I pride myself in the team I have built. Everyone on my team is not only excellent at what they do, but also cares about why they are doing it. The team builds the experience and the smiles that are on our practice members faces when they walk in is a testament to our dedication to that mission. We also have more services under one roof than any other chiropractic facility in East Dallas. We offer Diagnostic Imaging on-site to get to the root of the problem, exceptional chiropractic care to rebuild function, medical massage to break damaged tissue and restore function, stretch therapy to push the limits our past traumas and habits have created for us, and Class IV cold laser to speed up the healing process of soft tissue injuries to discs, muscles, and connective tissues.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I refuse to slow down and even though we all get older, I refuse to grow up. I still have an unquenchable thirst for adventure. I love camping, hunting, hiking, ripping down twisty roads on a motorcycle, bombing down a powder covered mountain on skis, and diving as deep as my lungs will take me when the ocean is available. I now have two amazing children to share that sense of adventure with. Seeing them break through a barrier or crush a trick or skill they have been practicing brings incredible joy into my life. I want more than anything for them to develop the same thirst for life that I got from my father- through the adventures we had together and the stories I grew up listening to around a fire.
