Meet Michael Kinler of Redenta’s Garden in Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kinler.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ruth Kinler started our company 25 years ago with our first store in Arlington. The Dallas store followed four years later. We have been pioneers of organic gardening, native plants, perennials and herbs. Our landscape design department carries this tradition into their projects and frames it with simple, clean compositions.

We mix the best parts of a garden shop, feed store and boutique. A great selection of familiar and rare plants is offered that is appropriate for our part of the world. Only natural fertilizers and pest controls are sold since we are 100% organic. When considering the look and feel of the stores, casual materials of a feed store have always appealed to us. Those materials are put together thoughtfully to present products and ideas in unique ways. We don’t want to just put stuff on the shelf. We want to show what’s great about it and how it can be used.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve always been a place that is ahead of the curve so we have to be on the lookout for new and exciting things to share with our customers. When we started, nobody was selling organics, perennials and herbs. All of that is much more available now (although not as well as we do it). We’ve been doing succulents for years and observed it becoming more and more common. We have to be a place to discover. A place you can count on finding something or giving you an idea you would not have found anywhere else. Lately we’ve been making plants available that nobody else carries. Our stores are filled with plant nerds who can’t wait to show them to customers and explain what makes them so great.

Redenta’s Garden – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our landscape design group is very good and helps give the stores a design awareness. They designed and built the structure along the front of the store that includes the orange CMU block wall, galvanized cattle panel fence, raised steel planter, green steel frame sliding farm gate and steel disk planter. They also helped layout the area inside the store we call our Potting Bar. That has become a fun place to talk to customers and pot up planters that they bring in or purchase from us.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Doing what we love and finding enough people to share it with. For us, gardening and design is a labor of love. As long as there are enough people who support our habit, we’re happy.
