Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Madrigal.
Michaela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Mirror Rentals with Calligraphy after becoming a stay-at-home mom and wanting a creative outlet. I’ve always loved calligraphy, so at first I was making simple signs like last name plaques. Then I came across someone in another state who was renting out vintage mirrors with lettering, and I immediately fell in love with the idea. I realized no one in my area was offering anything like it, so I started collecting ornate gold mirrors and built a small inventory.
My very first client came from a wedding Facebook group, but that first year was slow — I only had about three rentals. Instead of giving up, I threw myself into marketing, building a social media presence, attending open houses, and connecting with planners and venues. Over time, referrals started rolling in, and that’s when my business really began to grow.
Today, I have over 30 mirrors in my collection and several rentals each month. I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and social media influencers, but I’m just as proud of the everyday weddings where I get to add a timeless, elegant touch to someone’s special day. My goal is to continue growing, ideally booking a wedding every week and branching into more large-scale events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road in the beginning. My first year, I only had about three rentals, which made it hard to gain traction and grow. One of the biggest challenges was simply getting my name out there and building trust. I had to market myself from the ground up — creating a social media presence, reaching out to planners and venues, and attending open houses just to get my work in front of people. Word of mouth was slow at first, but once I started forming relationships with planners and venues, referrals became a steady source of business. Looking back, those struggles really pushed me to hustle and build the foundation that’s helping me succeed now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in mirror rentals with custom calligraphy and block lettering for weddings and events. All of the lettering is done by me, and I stay true to my own style rather than changing it for each event. That consistency makes the work feel authentic and recognizable. My inventory includes over 30 mirrors, most of which are vintage, ornate, and gold statement pieces that bring a timeless, romantic feel to any celebration.
What sets my work apart is that mirrors are more than just signage — they also become part of the décor and even a photo opportunity for guests. It’s a unique detail that elevates an event and leaves a lasting impression.
I’m most proud of the growth from where I started to where I am now. In the beginning, I was booking just a handful of rentals a year, and now I have several each month. A highlight for me was working with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and collaborating with influencers, but honestly, I’m just as proud of the everyday weddings where I get to be part of such a meaningful moment for people.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I don’t really rely on books or podcasts for my business, but I find a lot of inspiration and support through the wedding and event community. Early on, Facebook groups for brides and wedding professionals really helped me connect with clients and other vendors. I also love using Instagram and Pinterest to spark creative ideas and see trends in the industry. More than anything though, I’ve learned the most through hands-on experience, connecting with planners and venues, and constantly pushing myself to grow.
