Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle “Missy” Seyler.
Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We opened our gym 9 1/2 years ago because we love the sport of gymnastics and our own children love it as well. My husband and I were both gymnasts our whole lives and competed collegiately for The University of Oklahoma where we met doing gymnastics. I had a career ending injury that leads to the eventual amputation of my right leg 5 years ago. Losing my leg was the beginning of me getting my life back and becoming whole again. I believe that being a gymnast helped prepare me for this life changing event! I now not only coach full time but am raising 4 of my own beautiful children!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any startup, we have had our ups and downs along the way! When we opened our gym we only had our own 2 kids but have grown now to over 650 kids in the program! I had my leg amputated 5 years ago and it was hard learning to balance not only a new way of life but also doing it while running a business!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Southlake Gymnastics Academy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We offer gymnastics instruction to children from 18 months to 18 years! We teach not only recreation gymnastics but also competitive artistic boys, girls and tumbling, and trampoline! We are not a numbers gym and truly focus on the whole gymnast. We believe that gymnastics is for every child and what the sports teaches can be carried through to all areas of their lives as they grow! We consider our coaches and gymnasts family! We definitely love and support our gym family! We have grown together from a small program to one that is respected in our gym community.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are excited to continue to learn and grow as an organization and hope to branch out very soon possibly in a second location! As an individual, I am excited to continue to grow as a business owner and coach and push the limits as an amputee by putting one foot in front of the other!
