Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Saldaña.
Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Boss mama was founded in 2019 when my son Elliott was two years old. When he was born, my boyfriend and I were recent college graduates, and therefore weren’t financially stable enough for me to stay home with him. So when he was just three months old, I started my first year of teaching. Although I loved it, I dreamed of being able to stay home with my son and to experience all of the beautiful moments of his childhood. Fast forward to May of 2019. Right before his second birthday, Elliott had his first febrile seizure. It was the scariest night of our lives, but thankfully, our baby boy was okay. At this point, my boyfriends furniture store was doing very well, and it was possible for me to stay at home with our son.
I wrote my letter of resignation that same week and started working on my business plan. Inspired by my motherhood journey, I decided to design shirts for every mom doing her thing. So what is a boss mama? As defined by urban dictionary, a boss mom is an ambitious, highly driven, fierce, and outspoken mother who gets the job done, whether the job is being a homemaker, a stay at home mom, a career woman, a working mom, or mompreneur. We are ALL boss moms. And I’m just trying to make cute tees for all of us boss mamas getting sh* done.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Learning all aspects of running a business was a challenge for sure. When you’re just starting, it can become overwhelming. I worked on (and still do) every single part of my business all on my own! From registering the business, getting a license, creating the logo, finding wholesalers, creating designs, making the shirts, to packaging and shipping orders- you name it, I do it!! All while keeping my tiny human alive. Haha. But no complaints over here, I love it!!
Boss Mama Clothing – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I design and sell shirts. I have collections for moms, their littles, and dads but my main focus is making cute tees for the every day mom. You know, the moms with a never-ending to-do list yet still holding it down every time… in every aspect. I make every single shirt myself, and they’re made to order. Which I am so proud of because I make the shirts with so much love and spend so much time making sure they’re perfect before I ship them out.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is becoming the best version of yourself and reflecting that into your daily life. It’s focusing on self-love and self-care and finding peace, happiness, and joy in whatever it is you are doing.
