Meet Mikayla Lowe of Mikki Styles Salon in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Lowe.

Mikayla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. In high school, I was always known for either my hairstyles or my nails, because I would constantly change my style to something new. So, I have always had an interest in anything dealing with hair. I went to college in 2009 and aside from my studies, I would take up styling hair on the side for extra money. Friends would come to my dorm room to get their hair styled, which kept me out of my parents’ pockets less than when I began college. I met my now-husband in college as well, and I included him in my experimental styling. I helped him start his locs, which he has now had for almost 10 years.

I graduated in December 2013 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology. Originally, my goal was to go into Nursing, but as I gained a passion for hairstyling and Natural hair in particular. I decided I wanted to pursue a career in Cosmetology, so I moved to Dallas after graduating and taught at a Middle school during the day and attended Cosmetology school at night. I graduated Cosmetology school in 2016 and soon after secured a job as a Natural hairstylist at Huetiful Salon Arlington, where I learned a lot about the business and running a salon. I originally met the owner, Ken Burkeen, at a hair show in Texas and he has been a mentor of mine ever since. In August 2018, I moved into my own salon suite and established my business, Mikki Styles Salon, which I operate in Arlington, Texas. I offer a variety of natural hair services as well as color services to my clients. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to work in a field that I am passionate about and to serve others in a way that changes their lives as well.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. The biggest decision was deciding to change career paths but I am glad I decided to push myself to make the change. I didn’t want to regret not living out my dream and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’ve learned how to navigate the ins and outs of this business, and the good thing about this field is that it is always ever-changing, so I am always on my toes about learning new techniques and perfecting the techniques that I’ve already established.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mikki Styles Salon is a salon that caters to textured hair, which includes kinky, coily, curly or wavy textures. Styles that are included in this realm include twists, wash and go, bantu knots, silk press, protective styling (such as crochets) and other natural styles. I am also versatile in other textures as well as color. I am most proud of the fact that I can cater to my clients in a way that makes them feel as if they are not overlooked. I like to create an experience for each individual client so that their haircare needs are designed specifically for them. I’ve met so many wonderful new clients since moving here. Many of them in different professions, and being able to network through my sorority Delta Sigma Theta has been a Godsend.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always a creative child, my parents both loved music, especially my dad, so I always found myself in a choir of some sort, and just different avenues of expressing myself. My zodiac sign is a Libra and we are very artistic as well as laid back and caring individuals, I would definitely say my sign describes me to the T.
