Meet Mikayla Mitchell of The Reading Rabbit Bookshop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Mitchell.

Hi Mikayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In January of 2025, Ron and Vicki Rhodus felt God clearly calling them to open a bookstore. This calling was especially meaningful for Vicki, as owning a bookstore was a dream God had placed on her heart more than 30 years earlier, but in January it became undeniable and urgent. From the very beginning, The Reading Rabbit Bookshop was meant to be more than a place to buy books—it was created as a safe, welcoming space where everyone is loved and valued, regardless of religious beliefs, political views, race, sexuality, or background.

The Reading Rabbit is not a “Christian bookstore,” but rather a bookstore run by a family who loves Christ, and because of that, is committed to loving everyone well. With no money saved and no traditional roadmap, Ron and Vicki stepped forward in faith, trusting God to guide each step. In just a few short months, The Reading Rabbit went from a calling to a fully functioning bookstore, opening its doors on May 3, 2025.

Since then, God’s provision has been evident through the overwhelming support of the community and surrounding areas. Every open door, every connection made, and every opportunity given has served as a reminder that this story is ultimately God’s, and The Reading Rabbit exists to reflect His love through community, hospitality, and hope.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been easy. Like opening any new business, there was a significant learning curve and plenty of challenges along the way—from navigating logistics and daily operations to learning what it really takes to run a brick-and-mortar bookstore. There were moments where we had to adapt quickly and learn through experience.

That said, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have an understanding and supportive community. People have been patient as we worked through those hurdles, and that encouragement made a huge difference. The challenges helped us grow, refine our approach, and build a stronger foundation for the bookstore moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Reading Rabbit Bookshop is an independent bookstore built around the idea that books and community belong together. We offer a thoughtfully curated selection of new books for readers of all ages, with a focus on creating a space where people feel welcome, comfortable, and excited to linger—whether they’re discovering a new favorite author, attending an event, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

What sets The Reading Rabbit apart is our emphasis on community-first experiences. We are known for hosting author events, book launches, book clubs, and private gatherings that bring people together through a shared love of stories. We also work closely with local authors, educators, and small businesses, allowing the shop to serve as a creative and cultural hub rather than just a retail space.

One particularly memorable highlight was hosting New York Times Bestselling Authors Ali Brady during their tour for Battle of the Bookstores. The turnout and support from our community were so heartwarming that the authors were immediately inspired to start writing a holiday novella called Merry Little Bookshop, inspired by our community and The Reading Rabbit. For anyone interested, pre-orders are available through our website.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the inclusive and welcoming environment we’ve created. The Reading Rabbit is intentionally approachable and designed to be a safe space for people from all walks of life. We believe books have the power to connect people, spark meaningful conversations, and build understanding—and that belief is reflected in everything we do, from the books we carry to the events we host.

When people walk into The Reading Rabbit, they’re not just supporting a small business—they’re supporting a community where stories, creativity, and connection come to life.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
The success of The Reading Rabbit has been made possible by the support of an incredible community. We’ve been especially fortunate to receive guidance and encouragement from fellow local business owners who generously shared their time, advice, and insight. Jess and Kyle of Mandala Elemental Wonders in Azle, MJ and Daniel of Nat20 Cards & Games in Azle, and Hannah and her team at Inkwell & Sons in Springtown, Texas have all played a key role in guiding us, collaborating with us, and supporting us as we navigated the challenges of opening and growing a small business.

Finally, we are deeply grateful for our amazing team and community. Their ongoing support, enthusiasm, and encouragement—whether attending events, recommending the store, or simply sharing kind words—have been foundational to the bookstore’s growth and success.
