Meet Mike Medford Sr. of Medford Design in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Medford, Sr.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mike. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started contracting in 1977, specializing in concrete and framing projects. I’ve owned a few different types of home services businesses in Arlington over the years, and started Medford Design Build in 2007 with my son Michael, Jr. as a partner.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road? More like a roller coaster ride! The biggest challenge is the boom and bust economies causing either too much demand or too little. It’s not very often business is at an even pace. As I’ve matured as a business owner, I feel more confident in dealing with the economic cycles.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We have positioned ourselves as a full-service luxury remodeling company. Kitchens, bathrooms, whole house remodels, outdoor living areas and room additions are mostly the projects we do. We aren’t afraid of taking on an unusual project, like the sub- terrainian garage we are currently building. I’m most proud of our team work approach to our projects, using highly skilled specialists during every step of the way. Everyone on our team understands that we are relationship builders first. This gives our clients an outstanding experience and is the reason that 85% of our business comes from repeat business and referrals from our clients.

What were you like growing up?
I was a natural builder and a business person. When I was in grade school through high school I had paper routes which included selling subscriptions, delivering newspapers and collecting. This gave me an opportunity to learn business and customer service skills. We lived on the outskirts of town with woods, fields and creeks, and a new sub division being built close by. I was fascinated by the building process and spent a lot of time talking to the workers. I took materials from the scrap piles and built tree, underground and free-standing forts. So, it seems being in the building business was in my blood.
