Thanks for sharing your story with us Trenice. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for esthetics started when I was eight years old. My mom would bring my sister and me to most of her beauty appointments. We would tag along and sometimes join in on her services, it was definitely our version of bonding. Well, one day, she asked me would I like to get my eyebrows waxed. Most young kids would probably run away from this but I was eager to see what the wax felt like. I had no idea I would fall more in love with my eyes, after experiencing my first eyebrow wax. I only felt joy while getting serviced and happiness once I saw the work after. Majority of my family have a cosmetologist background, including my mom however, I never understood styling hair. I’ve always liked getting beauty services performed on me from my hair to my nails. I had no idea this field was a possibility until I became addicted to YouTube makeup tutorials back in 2009. In the process of teaching myself more about makeup & finally building the courage to start getting Brazilian waxes, I discovered Aveda Institute of New Orleans. Being a student there, opened my eyes to endless possibilities. Waxing came naturally to me all thanks to being a product/client of the industry. I knew what the excitement of having my eyebrows waxed was like to the nervousness of my first bikini wax. I’ve always wanted my guests to feel comfortable, safe, and free of judgment. Once I relocated to Dallas in 2015, I knew my passion was to start my own business built on those three principles. My family, friends, former boss, clients, and coworkers gave me the courage to do so in May 2019. Every day, I am fortunate to see the fruits of my labor through the faces of my clients and it has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What exactly is a smooth road? I don’t think I know what that feels like, lol. All jokes to the side, I have been extremely blessed through my entire process. It was necessary to make the transition smoother for my client’s sake, so I focused a lot on presentation. Location and finding adequate products was the easiest decisions to make while building my website and scheduling system was the most challenging. I had no idea designing websites was time-consuming but I also decided to be hands-on with everything involving Mild Magnolia. When you are doing things solely, it can become overwhelming. I had plenty of moments where even the most simple things seemed like a struggle. Adjusting to owning and operating your own business is something I work on every day. I wake up and go to bed grateful for the opportunity to be able to do so!
Please tell us about Mild Magnolia.
Mild Magnolia is an esthetics studio that enhances natural beauty by providing hair removal, lash, and tinting. We specialize in head to toe waxing services. Naturally, clients are the most anxious when coming in for their first Brazilian wax. Watching the client relax and actually enjoy their service due to our gentle and educational way of doing things is satisfying. Seeing that same client come back in 4-6 weeks is what we are most proud of. Bikini waxes can be intense but also having to grow your eyebrows out after a service gone wrong can be just as dreadful. Building relationships with clients, extending service duration to ensure every client has enough time to receive proper care even if we have seen them numerous times is important to us.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Holiday time with my family. My mother truly enjoys Christmas and every year our house was decorated from the inside on out. We always had the 7ft+ Christmas tree and the amazing Christmas lights that her and my stepdad would put up every year after Thanksgiving. Of course, the lights would stay on past the New Year but no one complained. My siblings and I would always unwrap one present of our choice at midnight. Most of the time, it would end up being the best present under the tree. As adults, we are now more centered on giving my seven nieces and nephews the best holiday memories. My mom still finds a way to surprise us with gifts as well.
