Meet Maribel Corona of Minds In Action in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maribel Corona.

Maribel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
This is my 10th year as a Therapist! What a great way to showcase this professional milestone by sharing my story with you. I absolutely love my profession, it gives me a great sense of purpose to help people. Coming to the office doesn’t feel like a task, I enjoy seeing my clients and feel very privileged they allow me to walk along them for part of their healing journey.

I started my career in counseling working mainly with children and adolescents, to work at their developmental level I became interested in Play Therapy. It is a wonderful tool to help that age group, so I attended training and supervision and eventually became a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. Along with very talented colleagues I participated and led the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Texas Chapter of the Play Therapy Association serving as a Board Member and President. When I moved to Plano TX, my professional focus changed as I was being sought after by more adults, this population has different developmental needs and thus I attended more training to enhance my skills. Currently I’m focusing on using more direct methods from Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, and most recently from The Gottman Institute which focuses on relationship counseling. Along the journey I trained to be a Certified Anger Resolution Therapist and a Humanistic Sandtray Therapist (level II).

My ten year journey as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor has been filled with joy seeing thousands of clients of all backgrounds and with different presenting challenges. Being trained to serve a wide range of ages and issues helps me conceptualize cases effectively. I don’t like to box myself in any one age-niche, clients come in having relationship problems with their children, spouse, parent, at work and thus having a wide range of experience gives me insight to better serve my clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
Moving to Plano two years ago brought a great deal of uncertainty to my life; I was an established Clinician in my previous community and co-owned a large Counseling Practice. When I decided to move to Plano two years ago, I took a leap of faith and a career risk since I had to re-establish myself basically from scratch. I opened my new individual practice on October 1st, 2015 with one client, and by the end of the third month in practice I had built a client base which replaced my old case load. I am very appreciative of the response from the community and my clients!

The road to re-establish a practice was not easy, I sought mentorship from old and new colleagues, it made me feel very loved to have colleagues believe in me and encourage me. I pay it forward now by mentoring an intern as well as up and coming therapists who are also establishing their practices.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
After co-owning a large counseling practice in South Texas, I went “solo” for a couple of years. My new endeavor Minds In Action, Inc. is a company I created to start building a team of competent, effective therapists who have a passion for client care. The development of any company concept is hard work, and one of vision. I think a ten year milestone is the perfect time to expand from being an individual provider, there is only so many clients I can see per week. By creating a corporation I want to expand on my experiences, skills, and passion and eventually invite other therapists with similar vision to join in order to provide consistent level of care across different ages, and presenting challenges. Although in the beginning stages I am very proud to be in the process of building this framework which lived in my thoughts and is now is in action!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love living in Plano, and having the access to all the surrounding communities. Having so many employers, so many neighborhoods, school and business it provides a great location to have a Counseling Practice. Sometimes I see a business executive, then the next session it may see a stay-home mom, then a teenager on their way to college. The diversity of culture and presenting challenges is wide and thus it keeps me learning and pushing myself to deliver an effective treatment.
